I have a '99 Explorer V8 AWD with 290k miles and the water pump started leaking. The engine runs really good and gets 19 mpg @ 70. I tried to replace the pump and broke a bolt behind the timing cover. I glued the bolt in place and ran JB Weld over the pump and the cover. The job took me most of 3 days because I tried to drill the bolt out and failed. Then putting the fan on was a bitch so I quit, had a beer, and went to it the next morning. I'm in my late 70s and can't remove the timing cover and can't afford to have it done. I finally got it together and put a bottle of stop leak in it and it doesn't leak. Would you trust it? I have to drive it 440 miles home, after wintering in FL, in the spring. Thanks for your answer.
I don't know what kind of "stop leak" you used, but I have had good luck with minor leaks using BARS COPPER 1109.... You cant expect miracles, but if you have a quart a month type leak it should work.. If you have a quart a day leak, you got problems..
I would suggest several 20 mile trips around town to convince yourself if it is a permanent fix. You did not say exactly where the water pump leaks.. If its a seal, I would guess more problems. If you have a small gasket leak, it might be OK.
It's a new pump so that doesn't leak. The bolt is on the top of the pump on the drivers side in the corner. I used the silver Bars Leak that I researched on the internet.
I had this happen on my E-350 7.4. Ended up breaking the top of the timing cover getting it loose. Had to buy a new one. The bolts had seized in the timing cover. Once I got it off the bolts turned out of the block by hand. If it doesn't leak I think I'd just leave it til next time.
