I went with the 12 volt solutions since the OEM smartphone system is being phased out. Looking forward to the new Smartlink system that is said to be coming out this year. When that arrives I will install that. So far, though, no real issues with the 12 volt solutions unit.

Unless you need it right way, I'd wait for Ford's new system to become available. If you can't wait, the Ford module numbers for remote start and cell phone starting are (remote access) DL3Z-19A390B and (VSS) FT4Z-19A361A. You may also need antenna & fob kit. I don't have the part number for that.
But Ford has discontinued that system and the parts are getting harder to find and more expensive.
I've used Viper SmartStart on a few vehicles in the past for remote fob and cell phone app starting. It's about $70 per year subscription where Ford is $50. But apparently Ford's app maker is from Canada so I received the exchange rate and got it for $40.
There are lengthy threads on this subject on the forum if you search.

I wanted to use my OEM fobs so I purchased the Fortin unit (other forum members had stated having issues with the 12vSolution units). Here's a company that offers the Fortin as a kit.

Complete Remote Start Kit For 2017 Ford F-350 - Uses OEM Remotes - Prewired - Includes Required Flash Link Updater - MyPushcart.com

I had the factory kit installed after I purchased the truck. It works great and has a good transmitting distance but it does require an additional key fob. That Fortin kit looks good and doesn't require an additional key fob, but I don't have nay experience with them.

I did a self install of Ford's modules but spent extra money to get the range of a bidirectional fob as well as the flashing light to tell me if it started and if it's still running. I also wanted cell phone starting so I have that too.
I wonder about the range of something that starts with hitting your unlock button on the stock flip key.

Its the same distance you'd get for remote start from the factory. Personally, I like eye sight of my vehicle when starting it. I'm not sure how far the OEM fobs go as I have never tested beyond sight.

This truck seems to unlock from a farther distance than my 2014 & 2016 models that preceded it. So maybe systems that use the flip key/lock button would be OK.
But I wanted the 2 way communication where I could look at the fob and see what the situation is. Hence the bidirectional.

Understood. I just look towards the truck as I have mine set to turn the parking lights on with remote start. Also, I didn't have to do the headlamp control switch interface. Not sure why their doc depicts that hook-up
