Real-Deal Max Payload???

Need some help here. I am looking at F-350 long bed diesels to tow a 5th wheel with a pin weight in the 2600-2800 pound range (don't yet have the trailer). Looking at the specs for the 2017/18 SRW F-350 diesels it appears that they should have ample payload to do this, and the payload appears to have increased significantly over the 2016 models.

However, I looked at a couple of door stickers and the payload was WAY less than I would have expected--in the 3200 pound range. I would expect the max payload to be closer to about 3900 pounds. Are my expectations unrealistic?

Isn't there an option that allows increased payload?

I really don't want to have to get a dually. Can I realistically get enough max payload out of a SRW diesel to tow a 5th wheel with that pin weight and still have a reasonable margin for cargo?

thanks
Matt

Maybe with a regular cab XL. My F350 XLT CCLB 4x4 6.7 has a CCC of 3283. Doesn't leave much room after a 2800# pin weight.

You have found a common trap many don't discover until after they buy their truck!

I struggled with the same issue, and decided to order a dually. When not towing, I know I'm going to wish it was a short bed SRW. But...capability and safety when towing a 18,000# fiver down the road took priority.

The published pin weight on our fiver is 2650#. Want to bet when we get it to a scale that it weighs more? (It is not a toy hauler.)

Yes, and no. There are packages that increase cargo capacity, yes. But in order to realize maximum capacity you can do a couple things. One is buy a truck with the very minimum amount of options (such as an XL) or choose options that will enhance cargo capacity but may not be so desirable when not towing.
Using ksteve06's truck as an example. It's got a pretty decent payload for a single rear wheel truck, but what could he have done to improve the cargo capacity?
His truck does have the snow plow prep, FX4 package, and 11500 GVWR package. He also has a 3.55 differential and 20" wheels.
So, if you ordered his truck with a 3.73 (or 4.10 or 4.30 as available) and 18" wheels, the cargo capacity would be higher than it is.

Yikes! That would take a lot more self-control than I'm capable!

I'm with you there. Some things just aren't worth it!

Going strictly off memory here, but I was looking at a max payload chart that IIRC, said the max payload for an F350 SRW CCLB 4x4 6.7L with 17" wheels is 3940 lbs.
I have no doubt an XL would achieve that and as can be seen, a nicely optioned Lariat with 20" wheels gives up almost 400 pounds of cargo carrying capacity.

Full timing?

I'd want a DRW for that load. My 2015 SRW has 3000# on it's back, I don't care what the sticker says, it needs way more spring to be safe. It's sagging pretty bad. Custom springs or airbags needed. If the trailer has a 2800 pin weight, I'd want a truck that can handle 4000#.

Heavy options

My 2017 F-350 CCLB 6.2L Lariat Value Package with 11,500 GVWR and 20 inch rims with AT tires has a payload of 4080.
Adding the 6.7l diesel will reduce the payload by approximately 700 lbs.
This would put a diesel version of my truck at approx 3300 lbs.
Sounds like you need a DRW for that trailer.

Is 2 wheel drive an option for you? If so I believe it frees up about 400lbs.

If not then maybe short bed? Long beds weigh a couple hundred pounds more.

XLT package with 18 inch AT tires should yield a good compromise of options and weight.

I went through this last year. A CCLB, 6.7, 4x4 loaded truck will have a 3200# or so payload. I ended up with a 4753# payload on a very loaded F450, which I enjoy daily driving. With a 2600-2800# pin and a family of 5, I just couldn't make a SRW work.

Need to figure about 20% of the trailer GVW for the king pin. I'd be inclined to ignore the list pin weight they give you, truly optimistic.

Zero in on the trailer before deciding on the truck.

I ran this drill with this crew last week here:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...r-package.html

Lariat CCSB 4x4 SRW Diesel is likely going to be 3200-3500 in payload depending on options.

Longbed 100-200 less than that due to additional weight of frame, bed, etc.

Absolute max GVWR of any SRW is 11,500 lbs.

In my thread im worried about a 2250 lb pin weight. Not sure what your load carrying requirements are (family, gear, etc). But my requirements plus your pin load would exceed the payload of the above listed trucks.

Good luck. It is a tough situation for sure.

It sure would be nice if Ford would print the cargo capacity as well as trailer capacity on the window sticker. Ford knows these numbers when the truck rolls off the assembly line.

At least, for guys that are shopping by walking around the dealer lot they can see right away what the truck is capable of. I've seen those figures listed on a dealer's website for each truck. It's those specific numbers on 2016 trucks that made me hold out and order a 2017.

I haven't seen anyone point out that the yellow sticker payload is based on the DERATED payload assigned by the manufacturer. GVWR is a paper number used for tax/registration/licensing and has little relationship to what the truck can actually safely haul.

My '17 F350 CCSB 6.7L SRW pulls a fifth wheel with a 3150# pin weight and is nearly 1000# under the RAWR but I'm only about 300# under the yellow sticker payload.

They don't make it easy to figure out what you can pull/haul.
