looking for guidance to diagnose/repair the issue on my c6 tranny. The issue i'm dealing with is fluid is leaking from the front of the bell housing.Now wait I know what your gut reaction is... Replace the front pump seal. Upon inspecting the fluid i soon realized i had an other issue at hand. I soon remembered an old adage that said "Oil and Water DONT mix" hence my problem, coolant in my trany and most likely oil in my radiator .The dip stick pulls clean so i guess that,s a plus. FTE i'm turning to you for help. I want to keep this California classic running strong! What could be some causes for this issue? How to diagnose them ? How to go about fixing properly?
The only way coolant and ATF can mix is if the cooler in the radiator leaks. That is the only place that this can occur.
First, fix or replace the radiator. Then rebuild the transmission. Coolant will dissolve the glue that holds the friction material to the steel backing plates.
Hey Mark , Thank you for your reply. I would have never guessed that the leak would have come from the radiator. Ill be lookig for a replacment next week. I did realize the tranny would need a rebuild after seeing the fluid mixing. Toying with the idea of doing it myself . Never done it, but really want to gain the knowledge through experience. Any tips for a first timer?
Trans Fluid clean? Not milky like if water was mixed in? Wonder if coolant is leaking from the back of the engine. You could bypass the radiator cooler and see if problem persists.
CRS-don't remember if there were any soft plugs back of the engine (away from the garage right now)

I think you missed this:

Smully a couple of questions;
1) Did you find coolant mixed in the tranny or just leaking out of the bell housing?
2) Which dip stick pulled clean, the engine or tranny or both?
As for replacing the Radiator, you can just add a tranny cooler and not have to worry about mixing at all.
ok so I put a catch pan under the bell housing and collect samples LOL .. and what I can see is that I have two issues .The trany is definitely leaking but the fluid is clean NOT milky.Coolant in the catch pan is clean as well. Dip stick clean but have oil residue in radiator. Not sure where the coolant is coming from but one could assume bad head gasket with oil in the radiator. Oh well guess its time to rebuild the top end and tranny. Any suggestion for rebuild kit on a budget?
thanks for the input
As part of your rebuild, I would highly recommend a seperate (tube & plate style) tranny cooler and a remote type tranny additional filter. Both would make your life much easier maintenance-wise anyway.
That is good news actually. I would have the heads redone at a shop they can verify the heads are good. Have them surfaced and have hardened exhaust seats installed too. As for the bottom end I would look at Jegs as they have good prices.

Thanks do you have a model or part number so I can research it .

Thanks , I’ll have to find good shop here in sac. What possible issue should I be aware of when verifying the heads are good?
