Question 95 Lightning Spark/Start Problem

First off some details
1995 F-150 Lightning 5.8L 351w (R VIN) 130K miles

Bought truck from family member knew it needed some work so I began repairs so that I could pass state inspection for Tags.
Everything ran well for 3 weeks considering it sat for 2 years with out running
Replaced:
Radiator, Thermostat, Shocks all around, Complete Front suspension

Took for inspection Friday and it passed inspection for state. Leaving the shop driving home the engine just straight died. Towed home started troubleshooting
No Spark/No Start cleaned all ground points under hood.
Read in another thread about Engine Coolant senor, Intake Air Sensor causing this issue with EEC-IV. Truck started on time ran for about 20-30 minutes then cut out.

Pull the SPOUT and she fires up immediately and idles well cuts out if accelerated past 2k RPM. Replace SPOUT and nothing but Crank. KOEO giving 111

Thoughts sugesstions

Your other thread for this issue stated you got Codes 211 and 542 as well. (https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...art-spark.html)

Based on the symptoms and codes I would lean towards a bad PIP. There is enough signal to trigger the ICM with the SPOUT unplugged, it's designed to do that for Limp mode operation, but not enough for the computer to control the timing.

Could be a bad computer, but I think that is an outside chance at the moment.

FYI..the PIP is also referred to as the stator and it is located inside the distributor. It can be changed, but requires some special tools. It would be interesting to see if an LED PIP signal tool would trigger with the SPOUT in the circuit.

Update....

Went out to truck today after it sat for 2 days havet been able to LED test yet. Truck started right up idle is a little rough but smoothed out.

After letting it run for about 10 mins to warm up a bit tried to accelerate the throttle and it died out at 2500rpm. Restarted but only after quite a bit of spit/sputter.

Thinking this is more an more the PIP or ICM aare my thoughts going in the right direction?

Any thoughts appreciated....

I'm going to lean towards PIP/ICM but would check fuel pressure as well.

Looks a lot like a PIP issue to me. The black colored CCD style ICMs rarely go bad. But they do from time to time. ICM could be dragging down the PIP signal, hence the Code 211.

Pull the shutter wheel under the rotor & look directly at PIP.

Brush & vacuum trash/metal/debris out of the pick up.

Thumbs up Thank you !!

All I wish to thank you for your feedback.

I replaced distributor since it was less expensive and time consuming without proper tools just to replace PIP. Replaced ICM too as good measure since it was 22 years old.

Truck fired right up and running quite well even regained throttle that was loss before when it was running.

Good deal! Thanks for the feedback. It's odd when pulling the SPOUT allows the truck to have spark and fire up for this issue. Thanks to David for reminding me again there are several failure modes for that signal beyond a bad sensor.

Is the replacement ICM black or gray? It should be black

Did you use thermal paste on the back? (Not silicone grease)

Update...

Yes the ICM is Black and I used Thermal Compound after giving the heat sink a good cleaning heavy amount of oxidation.

I am in the IT field very well aware of use of Thermal compound. You guy were great for the feed back hopefully I will be able to help others
