a large, heavy motor vehicle used for transporting goods, materials, or troops.
Probably because the only one's you see on dealer lots are XL trims with gas engines. In fact I never see any super cabs at all in my area, much less a super cab long bed. I love the way they look and function though.

That's what I thought. Mine is an XLT, so I asked. He said trim level made no difference. A Super Cab (with an 8' bed) is considered a work truck as they are [almost] exclusively bought by men in the trades. They sometimes like amenities like leather and a lot of buttons.
Personally, I don't agree with them, but then, who am I? (the owner of a so called "Work truck")
To me, all trucks are work trucks.

In reality, a "work truck" is just a no-frills pickup with virtually no options to keep price as low as possible but still do the job every bit as well as a fully loaded truck.
Sitting on my local dealer's lot is a (white) 2017 F-350 Crew Cab Short Bed 4x4 XL. It has crank windows and vinyl seats and floors, and a manual transfer case lever. To me, that is a work truck. This same dealer has a 2017 F-350 SuperCab short bed diesel Lariat Value package, with a leather interior, normal-size moonroof, heated seats, navigation system, and 8" instrument cluster display. You're trying to tell me that's a "work truck?"
Yeah, that's good for the tailgate. We'll just lean 300# of wood on it.
Manufacturers are very cagey about how much load a tailgate is rated for. They really are pretty solid. People are frequently parking a 4-wheeler on the tailgate, or a snowmobile. Even the tailgate step, which is rated for 350lbs, is placing all that 350 pound weight levered out away from the tailgate...which means the strain on the tailgate internal frame must be enormous. In the case of the tailgate being up, I see a lot less strain being placed upon the gate, and I routinely see people carry lumber or other heavy things in this manner.

I agree with you. However, my Lariat short bed diesel is in fact my work truck lol.

According to them it's only the Super Cab, long beds that are considered works trucks.
