Disintegrating Dipstick #2

You guys might be right as I remember the manual does say fully inserted and I may have falsely altered the method after reading the training manual. But let me ask this, how much oil do you put in at changeout and how do you read that on the dipstick? I (used to) put in 15 quarts.

My first dipstick broke apart over 10 years ago. My dealer replaced it, changed the oil and filter and I have not had any more problems with the dipstick. When I change the oil I put 14 and 1/2 quarts back in and have never had to add any between changes. Wish I could say this about my Ranger.

This is what member "KW5413" (I think that was his handle but a good guy) used to say back when my truck was pretty new and I did it this way for a few years. I don't remember his reasoning back then but I followed his lead as he was one of the perceived smarter 6.0 guys on the board at that time. Eventually, I started paying to having my oil changes done, however, (mostly because it was easier than hassling with getting rid of oil) and the guys at the oil change place said they had to do 15 quarts, by the book. I let them and have been doing 15 quarts since and haven't noticed any negative consequences.

I found 15 way too much, always worried about seals and leaks when that high. Mid-stick is perfect if you don't normally burn oil as it's easy to see if you're gaining or losing. Obviously if you're burning oil you max it each time, and check more often, and keep a quart in the vehicle...
