My 03 starter of my Expedition 4.6L V8 has been making this clicking sound every morning after the truck starts and I'm getting tired of it.
I have consider trying to repair, anyone figure out a repair or maintenance to get the old starter working smoothly again? If it's just not worth it and need to replace the whole unit, any recommend? The prices on this starter go all over the place.I see a replacement starter is about $40 online from Hexautoparts.com while $110 on Buyautoparts.com
The more expensive,the better ?
Appreciate your thoughts.
are you sure the ticking is the starter ? After the truck starts and you release the key, there should be no power to the starter. Unless the bendix is sticking and starter gear is dragging, you should not have a noise... and normally noise would be grinding or squeal, not a tick.
Look for a starter company that gives a 1 or 2 year warranty, not 60 days... Your right, the price depends on the Seller... I have seen GOOD starters for $60. that are same or better quality than the $125.
You really want to get that fixed ASAP. If the starter is staying engaged after the engine fires, it's possible that you could damage your flywheel. That would require the transmission to be removed in order to replace, which certainly isn't a cheap fix.
I'd suggest junking the old starter and checking out RockAuto. I stick to name brands that I trust over the cheapest available.
