Only thing I can say is make sure to mark them before taking it apart. Had one 390 gave me fits when I put it back together cause the factory mixed up two caps
yah im not soo interested in re-using them if i dont have to!
only looking at +450's tq/hp range right now, but want to build so i can safely double them numbers in the future.
right now my weakest links are the crankshaft and the main caps
and a custom 3.98 crank is still a couple years away
pro-gram mains are gunna cost me about a grand plus machine work, I can do that
But are they worth it? is there a better option or any options for that matter?!
The front and back Pro-Grams aren't really worth the cost over stock, all you need is the three center caps to get the cross bolt main setup.
There's an outfit offering a full girdle that connects the main caps to the oil pan rail.
I had a spare set of 427 cross bolted main caps. I gave them to a friend of mine in southern Calif. They had the caps the spacers & the bolts for the 3 centre main bearings . I don,t think he ever used them . To use them you would have to drill though the side of the block & fit them properly. These were used on the ford 427engines 65 to 68 side oilers. Friskyjake
If you need more strength than the 3 center Pro-Gram caps tied to the side of the block and the girdle, all held together with a good set of studs, you may as well order one of the new aftermarket blocks.
They look good, but has anybody actually used them?
Aftermarket aint allways an upgrade ya know!
after seeing their "websight" really kinda made me wonder...
Appears their having issues with their web site catalog, but looking at other sites it appears they make main caps for several different engines, even Dmax diesels, been around for a while, I remember seeing the FE main caps on eBay 15 years ago.
Guess one has the weigh out the cost difference between parts and machine work to reinforce an old block verses a new improved aftermarket block.
Been thinking about getting the three center caps for my engine, don't need them for my power level, but I've got an old Pro-Stock Engineering side oiler kit I'd like to install and it plumbs thru the cross bolts.
More of a cool factor thing than something I need.
The block is really the only thing I want to keep.
Im the second owner and the truck was pretty damn original when I bought it. Would like to keep the important things true to the truck
Besides if I went w/ an aftermarket block all the parts I have will just be a waste of money!!!
