2003 5.4

Guys - I am rusty mechanically. I bought years ago a used 5.4 engine for a 97 F150 that I had. It originally had a 4.6 and I was going to drop the 5.4 engine in, but project got scrapped and truck has been gone for years.

I bought off one of the forums this engine from a fellow member. I remember him telling me it had a ford remanufactured tag on the block - was never sure if it really was and 9 years later I finally open the box up to verify what I have since I bought a 2003 F250 5.4 that needs either head gaskets or another engine. This truck has 218,000 - so it is due for some love.

I found the tag on the engine but am not sure if it is a 4.6 or a 5.4 as I can not locate the serial number on the block. The Ford remanufactured engine tag is metal and dated 03/31/2005 YC2Z - 6006 - BARM Ser no. R07239815

So anybody got thoughts about exactly what I have? From my reading and what is currently in the F250 it needs a 5.4 2V engine. I assumed all the accessories would be transferred over and used from the F250.

Thanks in advance.

Jim

I can tell you for sure it is 2 valve but I don't know if there is any way to externally distinguish a 4.6 from a 5.4 unless the 4.6 is a Romeo engine. If it has 6 flywheel bolts it is a Romeo 4.6. The Romeo also had fewer valve cover bolts, 11 vs the Windsor's 13/14.
There are numbers stamped or cast into the block behind the flywheel that may tell the tale. The flywheel may have to come off to read them.

Well I have 13/14 bolts holding the valve covers on - so with the remanufacture tag and looking the engine over it appears I got what I expected a 5.4 engine. Thank you.

Windsor 4.6 has the same # of valve cover bolts as 5.4.
5.4 were all Windsor, but there were Windsor and Romeo 4.6.

I found a W on the valve cover - still feeling like it is a 5.4. So it is the bolt count on the flywheel and markings on the block after removing the flywheel.

Hopefully someone else who knows more about it than we do can help.

If I were in your situation, I would pull the flywheel and check the numbers. I don't know for a fact if this will help, this is the only suggestion I could think of since I didn't come up with anything on a quick search on the rebuild #.

Got intake off and look what I found - bottom of box was open and I did not realize it. The intakes were plugged thank goodness. So here is what I know so far. Ford remanufacture tag dated 2005 - I purchased engine used in 2008 and it sat for 9 years in my possession. So I need to further evaluate exactly the mechanical condition of this engine without tearing down completely - and weigh this against doing what is necessary on the original engine in the truck that was a 1 owner truck for 13 years until it started running with a skip next it was smoking real bad (water only in radiator and bellowing white smoke) so head gasket or both heads - but in looking at using original engine it is 218,000 miles. It is a So California truck so it looks almost new under the hood. Jim
