U Joints

Hello, I am fairly new to Excursions and I am planning to replace my U joints as the truck is 12 years old and I want new ones before taking off with my travel trailer this summer. Now, in looking at the Moog website, I see they offer a package deal, but one offering shows three U joints for the rear drive shaft and the other shows two. My Ex has only two, but I would like to know why some have three. As I said, I am new to Ex's. Thanks in advance.

I have the double cardan, and actually had failure. The research I did, trying to figure out what was wrong, led me to this assumption. The double joint is supposed to be stronger, that is where things change. It also has a centering ball and it is all built into the yolk. when the u-joints go the centering gets destroyed. The entire head must be replaced, this is a basic drive shaft rebuild, and then balance. My truck was not drive able, it felt like there were issues with the trans, or transfer case. I found the problem when I pulled the driveshaft to tow the ex home. Since the rebuild, it has been a dream to drive again. It would have been so much easier to have just changed 2 u-joints and then been on my merry way. The pinion angles are also different with the two different drive shafts.

you can replace just the centering ball. Moog makes a crappy kit and Neapco makes a decent one. i used Spicer 1350x joints but they dont make the ball socket any more.

after this winter I will be rebuilding my front shaft too, again 1350x joints and there is a driveline shop locally that stocks that Neapco ball socket, but I don't have the part number handy

edit: Neapco 7-0081NG i'm pretty sure is the ball joint

I found it easier to just buy the new spicer double cardan and just replace the whole head. None of the replacement centering units are very good in the bigger ones. The small ones that are used on many jeep applications, seem to hold up well.

just look for the biggest, I cheated, my drive line place actually carries them and I got the whole thing for less than what I could find the parts alone for.
