Exclamation Excursion Driveshaft Information / Please Post

All Excursions, gas or diesel that I have ever seen have a one piece drive shaft.

Today Landyot and I hooked up as he travelled through town and we were checking out the differences between our trucks. I couldn't believe my eyes - his 2002 Excursion has a FACTORY double carden drive shaft with the spline boot at the rear of the shaft. My 2000 Excursion has a FACTORY one piece shaft with a single u-joint at each end and the spline boot at the front of the shaft.

A double carden drive shaft has two u-joints at the output of the transmission and a single u-joint at the rear differential. Just the thing every Excursion should have to prevent driveline vibration and body boom.

Please post the info on your truck. Does it have a factory double carden with two u-joints at the transmission output and a single one in the rear, or a single u-joint on each end of the drive shaft?

This may explain once and for all why some people have tons of driveshaft vibration problems while others have none. If anyone has any insight on this please share.

Ditto, my 2000 has a single u-joint on each end and the spline at the top of the shaft.

Is his a 4x4 and yours 4x2? The manual shows the 4x4 has the double cardan shaft.

I'm a new user here, and I'd like to thank everyone for the information that is on this site. Here's my first contribution...

2001 X Limited, V10, 4X4. Double Carden on the transfer case end, single u-joint on the differential end with the slip shaft towards the rear. The set-up on the front drive shaft is the same; double carden on the transfer case end with the single u-joint and slip shaft up front on the differential.

I do not know the service history, but I assume it came with these shafts in 2001. I'm in the process of trying to get the service history from the dealer the truck was serviced for the past three years. I'll let you know if I find out these shafts have been serviced/replaced/updated/etc.

When I first bought it, it shook bad between 62-65 MPH. Then I had Goodyear balance the Wrangler AT/S's, which helped a lot, but it still isn't perfect. They said one tire required 10 ounces on the inside to get it to balance. Seems to me they should have tried remounting the tire 180 degrees from where it was on the wheel. I'm going to stop back in when I get a chance and see if this helps. Otherwise, runs pretty smooth.

2002 Excursion 7.3 4X4 - has the single u-joints both ends, booted slip joint on the front. Interestingly the front driveshaft has the double carden on the rear and single up front.

Interesting stuff here folks. Got some e-mail on this too. A few trucks with factory double cardens in the rear, most with standard two u-joint drive shaft. The two with factory cardens so far are both 2001 LTD models. My brother in law had a 2002 LTD V10 and now has a 2004 EB 6.0 - no double cardens. This is really strange. What gives?

Homer - my truck is a 2000 4X4 XLT V10. I goofed in my initial post - Landyot's truck is a 2001 4X4 LTD V10 not a 2002.I should have put this in the first post.

Maybe we can sort this thing out by year. What model year manual shows the double carden on the 4X4 please? If they are supposed to have a double CV I'm going back to Ford to get mine.

RE front shafts - as far as I know they all have a double carden at output.

Well the problem with showing what is in the service manual is that they lump SuperDuty, Excursion, and motor home all into one manual in 2000.

I crawled under my X this evening ... and I'm not sure what I'm looking at. The drive shaft has a U joint (double, I think) ... then a short skinny section (maybe 1.5 feet) ... then a boot then the remainder is thick ... ending in another double U joint.
