9.75 is for the max tow package. Has nothing to do with engine size.
It actually has everything to do with engine choice, and something to do with the max tow package.
All 3.5L EB trucks get the 9.75" axle, as do 5.0L and 2.7L trucks with the heavy payload package. My '15 didn't have the max tow package, but had the 9.75.
Since you can't get the max tow package without the 3.5L EB, you won't find one without the 9.75" axle. Lots of other configurations get it, too.

I believe that changed last year Max tow and Max payload are the only 2 that get the 9.75. It may come with the 3.73 gearset as well. I read something on that but I don't remember where.

In the 5yrs I've had my truck I think I've only used the e-locker maybe a handful of times but it's still nice to have it. If you want it hold out for a truck with it or order one.
If you are living in a snowy area And/OR plan on taking your truck off-road, go for the E-Locker. You may only use it a few times, but when you need it, you need it. IMO, WELL Worth the few hundred extra dollars it cost me. Allows you to drive up a driveway, with one side of vehicle fully in 8" of snow, and other on pavement, in 2WD. Much better than LSD's I have had on previous Fords and the "Grande Locker (G80)" I had on an older Chevy.
It's a 3.5L EB Lariat with the regular towing package and payload package. The ETIS build sheet shows "With 9.75" Axle"
I stand corrected. I was pretty sure i had read that somewhere though. How and where do you pull that ETIS sheet? Oh and it's nice to know my 2015 has the 9.85 Axle.

The site is www.etis.ford.com. You now have to create an account to see vehicle details, but it's free. You can learn all sorts of stuff about your truck from here.
I have a 21" xl reg cab w/ hitch only option[no tow pkg.] and it has the 9.75/3.73 e-locker
I'm guessing that you have an 8' bed and the Heavy Duty Payload Package. If so, the Max Tow Pkg is included with the HDPP, and wouldn't show as a separate option. Those two packages are the only way to get the 9.75 axle.

No , I special ordered the truck
it doesn’t have the hdpp, I ordered
the hitch and brake control ala cart
It may or may not be a floating axle
but it is the 12 bolt 9.75
I’m guessing the 3.73 is only offered with a 9:75
[QUOTE=JKBrad;20779874]The 9.75 has 12 bolts and a more asymmetric shape. The 8.8 has 12 bolts and a more symmetric shape.
My 9.75
This is the super 8.8
yes, my 21' xl has the same, larger axle, I had a photo of the axle tag as well, I will have to crawl under again to get another photo, I was suprised to see that it was the 9.75
my 2021 stx 3.55 has the smaller axle, i am looking for photos i had posted on a different thread, both have the 2.7eb engine.
what is strange is the 4x4 stx gets over 24 hwy, the xl gets 20mpg.
Thanks

I've never seen a 9.75 on a 2.7 truck. Must have been done to keep the assembly line running vs waiting for the lighter duty axle. Use the parts on hand. There have also been posts here a few years back about trucks having heavy duty frames, that per spec, should not. So it looks like Ford will default to heavier duty parts when a continuance of production is needed.

Agreed I thought the only way to get the 9.75 on the 2.7 was was that 2.7 payload package - which is different than. The HDPP
