Need axle ed. #101

Could one (or more) of you kind folks enlighten me as to what 'type' of axle I have in my `99 Ranger 4x4 Supercab 'Sport' with 4R44E Trans? I have an "87" axle code which I've read is 8.8 and 4.10 - but is it an "open" or LS or what? And if you could SIMPLY explain the BASIC differences in "open", "LS" and "Positive Traction" and when and where (situations) these types are applicable or beneficial as well as when\where they would be a detriment - I'd be grateful. - Thanks in advance, Glenn...

pumpkin is the big hump in the middle of the axle where the differential gears are.

Open means there are no traction aids inside the pumpkin of the axle.
If you have one wheel on ice it will spin there hopelessly while the good wheel with traction does nothing and receives no power.

LS=Limited Slip (Ford talk)
Positive Traction = Limited Slip (GM talk)

The traction aid in the pumpkin of the axle allows only so much wheel slip or wheel speed difference between the right and left hand side before it starts to transfer power to the side that is moving slower.

Then the wheel with the good traction is sent about 25% of the available torque/power and that might be enough to get you going.

> and when and where (situations) these types are applicable

If the roads are not clear, dry, or even, it is good to have a traction device. Off road it is very good to have a traction device.

Ford axles will have an LS on the axle tag somewhere, usually right after the axle ratio.

If you happen to have an axle with a Limited Slip or Traction Lock(another Ford name)Rear with a 3.00:1 ratio ,the buck tag on the rear end the ratio mentioned on the bottom left hand corner of the tag will look like this.
ie: 3.00L:1

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Sep-02 AT 01:30 PM (EST)]Well apparently - I'm a moron - at least today. These are the letters & numbers I copied from my rear-axle tag : "S 374 S" & "10 75 8L02" - at least that's how I read it - Please keep in mind I'm still recovery from a fusion in my neck from five weeks ago - copying this info was NOT the most fun I've ever had. I believe there is a place in here to I.D. this info - but I haven't found it today. Tryin' to stay busy - Glenn . . . PS Was tough to read as well `cause it was\is on backwards (facing front end of vehicle) tried to bend it to read it, but was even harder - copied from upside down and backwards - story of my life haha . . .
