A 429 was swapped into my '77 Crew Cab before I bought it. It looks to have a 460 oil pan since the drain plug is in the bottom of the pan. Pics I've seen of 429 pans have the plug on the side of the pan at an angle. It has two dipsticks. One screwed into the pan and one on the front of the motor on top of the timing chain cover. I removed the dipstick from the pan to repaint the engine while it was out for my restoration. The motor came out of an early 70s Thunderbird I believe. In looking at the dipstick I removed, it only sticks out about an inch past the bottom of the tube when fully inserted. My question is, is this correct or should it extend further past the tube than that. Also, if it is incorrect, what options do I have for putting a different one on? Should I just used the one on the front of the engine or will this give me a wrong reading since it isn't the stock pan? Thanks in advance.

Look on the dipstick for the Ford ID number (similar to this: C8SE-6750-AA), post what it is
Thanks for the responses guys. I will get the number to you soon Bill, not around it now. It is a rear sump pan on there now Rich. It's a 4x4 CC. So I get what you're saying. The front dipstick will do me no good with the rear sump pan. I will just figure out the correct dipstick I need for the rear of the pan. Thanks again.
SO the number on the dipstick is FOTE-6750-AA. In looking online, it seems like it's for a newer model truck. I'm thinking this is why it only sticks out an inch past the end of the tube when inserted
Yes. That's true. As long as I know where full is, it doesn't really matter. I may still look for one but if I don't find a dipstick, I'll just go that route. Thanks
Number stamped on the pan is E7TE-6675-BB. According to my research it's a 460 pan off of an 80-86 truck. Looking at capacities for these trucks, it looks as though 6 quarts is correct. If I had just went by looking at pictures, it could have been anywhere from a 5 to 7 quart pan cause there's different ones that look exactly like mine. 6 quarts it is. Thanks
