When the motor in my 96 f-150 5.8 is cold it seems like it starts hard compared to other pickups of its kind. Sometimes it wont start on the first try either but always on the 2nd, and it also started to sputter a little right after it started so I changed the fuil filter and put new plugs in ,and it hasnt sputtered since but it still starts hard..Could the injectors be dirty?? its got 92,000 miles on it..
K this morning I tried starteing it again cause its been sitting for 2 days and it is cool out side and it turned over for awhile and when it started it spit and sputtered and then died. Then it started on the 2nd try..Im thinking injectors or maybe plug wires??any other ideas??
Are you allowing the fuel pump to run before cranking? What I always do, is turn the key on, let the fuel pump quit running (3-5 seconds) and then crank. The fuel may leak back down into the tanks, and the system isn't pressurized when you first come out to start it.
Just a suggestion.
Also, have you checked the codes? Are there any? It might point to something else if there is.
Ive got a 95 5.8 f150 thats doing the same thing, Took it to a dealer, but the problem is ocasionally intermitent And They couldnt figure it out. They said they found no codes. Their Next step was to get a fuel pressure reading when it was acting up but they had it for three days and I had to have it back. Good luck if ya find anything let me know.
This is what I would do. Cycle the fuel pump 2-3 times before cranking and then see how it does. I have a sneaky idea that the fuel is bleeding back into the tank.
I have the same problem on my 2000 5.4L Expedition. Please let me know if you find an answer and I will do the same. This is what I have posted:
2000 Expedition 5.4L has a problem starting in colder weather when engine is cold (less than 50 degrees F). The engine cranks fine, but I need to crank it for 2 to 3 minutes sometimes to get it started, when it does start it will chug/ hesitate for 7 to 10 seconds before it idles OK. It seems to be getting worst with Michigan's colder weather setting in. I did have this problem last year and cleaned the throttle body out which seemed to help somewhat. I have been cleaning the TB this year but it doesn't seem to help much. If the weather is warm or the motor is warn she fires right up.
I had new plugs and fuel filter put in and it still did it the next day, and now a few weeks later it hasnt done it since, not sure what it was but it starts right up now..
I had this problem with my bronco and replaced a ton of things over a period of time including fuel pressure regulator. In the end it was the fuel pump in the gas tank. It's been an angel ever since.
Have the exact same problem as you. Started hard for 5 years. Never started the first time I turned the key. Second time it starts right up. Tried everything. No dice. Finally had to change my computer because it would not send the proper signal to my idle air control valve and bingo truck starts up like a new one. I have 210,000 mile on an 87 f-150 5 liter. Hope this helps you.
