Finally purchased my dream rig a couple weeks ago. I purchased a 2004 limited with the v10 it is a one owner with 103000 on it. I sold my brand new 16 f150 and purchased this. I had looked for years trying to find a decent one in my area and it just showed up down the street from me. Anyway I was wondering what maintenance needs to be done on this rig. As far as I can tell after going thru the thousands of papers in the dash from previous owner the only thing that has ever been done is normal oil changes and the serpentine belt was just replaced last year. Im looking to do many many upgrades on this but figured id come here and post and see what all I needed to address before I start draining my wallet on extra things. this truck will be hauling my camper 33ft around 7 to 8000lbs. haven't hooked it up and hauled yet that will have to wait until spring time. One thing I just had done was the bolts on the right side of the manifold needed replaced and a new gasket, but I knew that when I bought it. Other than that nothing has been done its all original. Thanks in advance

... . Other than that nothing has been done its all original. ...
We bought our 2002 almost 2 years ago with 104k in a similar situation - all original with just necessary maintenance done.
We bought ours to tow a 23ft WW TH 7k.
I installed load range E tires, Bilstein shocks, F250 rear springs, Hellwig front/rear anti-roll bars, larger aux trans cooler, 3rd trans cooler, trans filter, 2008 diff cover and tie rod ends.
It tows great.
It still has the original serpentine belt and all the exhaust manifold bolts are intact.
Had just collected the plugs and boots to change the OEM plugs.
Not that this will happen on yours, but ours blew out the #3 spark plug at 108k.
If yours still has the OEM Motorcraft AGSF22WM plugs the first thing I would do is check the torque on them.
The factory install torque is 15 or 17 ft-lb and they can work loose with a lot miles.
I change plugs and boots at 50k and torque them to 25 ft-lbs.

Reason: Added items installed for towing.
Make sure suspension (shocks) are in good order and that your steering box is in good order, then all steering components (ball joints etc.) - that will take care of the ride and towing of the rig.

+1
Speaking as someone who JUST got their own Excursion on 12/29, 6 days ago, I can testify that there is SO much great info here to read that's it's almost overwhelming. But I'm in love with this thing and it sounds like you already are too. :P
Sample:
Ran mine out of fuel on first trip with it driving it home from NC to MN. Gauge showed 1/8th left, runs out on freeway. Turns out I have to do something called a 'hutch mod' and then also a 'harpoon mod' in the spring. Just learned it's like a semi-common prob with Excursion fuel pickups. So, dropping the tank in spring. But I know how to fix it now from reading here.
Thank you for all the good info. I have been reading thru this site for 2 weeks and there is a ton of info. Unfortunately now I am making a list of all the things I need and want to do to it and my wallet is screaming already lol. Ill try to keep everything posted on my journey to getting this rig the way I want it.
Yes I have some mirrors picked out already. And its going to the body shop soon to get a new bumper on the rear. The current one has some rust and dents. While its there roof bars are coming off to check for rust and then they are going to buff the whole rig and make it look new. My next major project is going to be spring swaps, Feel like I need to accomplish this first before I can really go any farther especially since this will be my towing vehicle.
After all the mechanicals are up to date. Tint the front window before people start trying to throw fish food at you at stop lights. Welcome to the forum! Nice truck.
Nice looking rig, and it's got the good engine!
Do you know what gear ratio it has? I'm guessing from the small paddle mirrors that it has the more common 3.73s. 7 to 8,000 lbs on the hitch may be more fun with the deeper 4.30 gears. Will you be looking to increase tire size over stock (31.6") after the spring swap?
its the 3.73, Id love to get some 4.30 gears got any?? And yes I am looking at new wheels 18 inch and new tires dont know if I want to go as big as 35 because the gears I have in it currently. May stick to around 285 tires. Also on the spring swap I have read thru all the threads I can see about springs on here and sent a email to ATS. I have seen other people getting ones from the salvage yard. As long I can verify it, is there anything I should look for while checking out ones from a salvage yard? Also the 30mm sway bar Id love to pick up if I can also, are those on 250 and 350? just trying to save some money if possible because like everyone on here I still have many other things I want to do with this truck.

Sorry, but I'm fresh out of 4.30 gears today.
Are you looking to go aftermarket or OEM for the new 18" wheels? One of the really good looking members here put this thread together a while back explaining about the '04 OEM 18"s that came on some pickups that can be used on an EX without needing spacers. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post16064812
Used springs can be fine for a swap, it's always best to verify the actual spring codes from the donor vehicle's door jamb sticker to be sure what you are looking at. The evaluate based on the donor's mileage, age and condition. If it doesn't look too bad on those checks the springs should be OK. I got very lucky with my X/B springs as a coworker had them sitting in his garage and was happy to gift them to me to get them out of his way! he installed a lift on his old Super Duty back at 20K miles, so my springs were virtually new and free! I had a local heavy truck spring shop make my new U bolts while I waited for $69, so that was my total cost for the 4" lift and spring swap.
Yes, a rear sway bar from a F-250/350 with the same Sterling rear axle should swap over to the EX, you may need to fiddle a bit with the end links to get the correct setup for the EX vs the truck.
We have many ways for you to spend your money, just let us know.
