My 86 150 4x2 has a 300 IL 6 with 3-speed column shift trans set-up and I am woundering what 3 or 4 speed floor shift trans will bolt-in with little or no trouble?
almost any one of them. you just have to cut a hole in the floor, and get a tunnel pan. you need the tunnel pan if you use a toploader because you'll have problems clearing the shifter bump.
If you are looking to just convert yours to a floor shift, Hurst makes a conversion kit. That includes directions and a template of where to cut the floor. There are no factory external linkages that were floor mounted which would fit your transmission.
Thank You - I'll look at the tech articles - this is a project that I am going to take on soon - I did get and install a floor shift kit - I am not happy with it - it is difficult to shift - alot of movement to find neutral - I drove a friends truck with a BW T18 and it was very smooth; however, I didn't like the very low 1st gear - I am looking at possible 3 spd w/ O.D. trans.
Any experience with or words to the wise for the 3 spd w/O.D.
The 87/88 toploader 3spd w/ o.d. is junk. at least mine was. the 3rd/overdrive bearing(s) were on the way out. the thing shook like a heroin adict 3 days off a binge.
when it worked, it worked good. but I've heard a lot of people break them the first time they plowed snow with them.
the t18, you start in 2nd unless you have to pull a load. the low gear makes it real nice if you have to crawl up a bumpy road, or start off on a hill with a ton of hay . if you want gas mileage, put in 3.08/3.00 gears in the rear, and use the t-18 or np435. you can still pull out, and you can still get good mileage.
I'll post again in a couple of weeks with the results of my project. I did find the tech article for the trans swap and it looks to be good reading before I start.
If you need a tunnel pan, I think I have a good one out of an 85. Cheap. Email me at mtflat(No Email Addresses In Posts!) and put FTE in the subject line if you're interested.
