Angry 1986 F250 Battery Problem

I own a 1986 F250 XLT Lariat. The battery keeps going dead! I believe that the battery just can’t hold a charge and needs to be replaced. But before I purchase a new battery I would hope someone could answer this question. Can a battery lose it’s charge just sitting in the driveway? I understand that if you leave the dome light on the battery will drain but no accessories are on. One night while taking the dog for a walk I heard a ticking sound coming from the truck. When I opened the door to find out where the noise was coming from it stopped. What could this ticking sound be? Could this sound be the something that is draining my battery? Could some kind of electrical problem such as a short cause a battery to drain? Or should I just replace the battery?

Before we jump to conclusions check the most obvious...don't just go out and replace your battery. Advance Auto or AutoZone will check your battery for free. If your battery is good (I put money on it that it is good) then you need to look into what might be causing a short...look for bare wires or danglin wires. make sure your battery doesn't ground out when you shut your hood. check all your fuses. You might also check your switch...it might be sticking in the acc. position...are you sure no acc. are on?

I have a 1965 Chevy that sits in the barn and once a year I go down and crank it and drive it around....I have yet to have a dead battery on it from just sitting there!!
