I just put a 351w ho with a C6 in my 64 f250 and want to add some fun. The engine and trans are bolted in and the long tube headers are done, it has a 4.88 gear and the engine has stock internals.
Things I need.
Carb (I'm thinking 650)
Intake (my friend gave me a vic Jr but I'd rather have a duel plane)
Distributor and ignition.
Things I want
A inexpensive set of heads like some machined gt40s
And a cam.
I don't know what to do about the exhaust yet.
Any input/help would be greatly appreciated
Untouched GT40s would be a hugh upgrade just bolting them on, you gain at least a 1/2 point in compression and enough airflow to make 300hp with nothing more than better than stock intake and exhaust bits.. which seems like you are already on the way to covering.
Don't go too wild on the cam, this is going in a truck. Keep the @.050 duration below 220* Going with a wide LSA EFI cam will help too in the driveability. These cams work great with carbs too.
The stock HO cam is pretty good, it's pretty much a flat tappet version of the HO roller cam used in the Mustangs with 260-something duration and 0.450" lift.
I've run the 280H in a built up 400M in a 77 F100. That' s about as wild as I'd go in a truck. Ran the Summit Racing .484/.510 in a stock 400M in that same truck too. That one was VERY responsive. I don't recall the part number but those were the lift numbers for it. Also ran a cam in a 390 in a 70 F100 with similar specs 30 years ago.
I'll probably be waiting in the cams and heads. I'm dumping so much money into things that I have to have plus I want to drive it without so I can have a benchmark. So to start the carb, intake, ignition, and headers will have to be enough. I still have to buy the water pump and fan (going electric for both) radiator, alternator, starter, and all the misc parts. The good thing is that when it's done everything under the hood will be brand new.
Poor man's cam - have a machinist cut new keyways in timing set to advance the cam 6° or 8°.
You're playing with fire here, you won't know the result until it's running, then it's a bitch to correct. Nobody I know would enjoy taking the whole front end apart once it's together.
I'm going to be putting on new fenders and radiator support this summer and that seems like a good time to do the heads and cam, It'll give me time to get the bugs worked out. I don't have my own garage so I'm using a friends shop right now and he's busier than he usually is so I get very little rack time. If it wasn't 0 degrees outside it would done already.
