Random long crank

Got an issue with a long crank situation. Doesn't happen all the time, mostly when cold. Will usually start immediately when it starts to turn over but sometimes will take several seconds of cranking before it starts. Once it starts it runs perfect. If I shut it off after it's warmed up and start it back fine if you don't let it cool back down. Usually starts fine if it is plugged in. Was thinking possibly dummy plugs but am open to suggestions.

Have you checked for codes?
Dummy plugs are usually a no-start hot, not cold.
If we are guessing, I'll guess glow plugs.

What are you reading the codes with? Need to monitor the FICM voltages. May have some bad glowplugs but they will throw codes.

Next cold start watch/ record your FICM voltages,IPR,ICP,ICPv, RPM, battery voltage. Do you wait a few seconds longer after the glowplug light goes out?

Will do that. Usually give it a few extra seconds after the light goes off.

My 06 did the same thing totally random no codes. swore it was possessed Finally found it watch the rpms on your scanguage mine was only showing like 30rpms but the motor was turning over fine believe it has to have 150 rpms to fire. It would fluctuate then catch and fire and run fine. It was the crank sensor up under the AC compressor the wiring harness had a short. replaced the pigtail and sensor and has been fine ever since.

Be sure to monitor all of the other values ICP, IPR all the usual stuff.

Good luck

Well start there my 2006 would do a long crank because of them had the old style with out the reinforced o rings. Found one of the original o rings to be clearly starting to fail. I did this repair 6 years ago never experienced a similar problem since

I agree w/ packagerjr - dummy plugs usually show up as a hot no-start. The OP's hot starts don't seem to be an issue. Either way, you can easily verify if the issue is in the HPO system or not by watching the ICP pressure and voltage.

That said, it is a good idea to install them as soon as you get a chance.

to me the process would be (since there are no codes):
watch all of the FICM voltages when cranking (MPower, LPower and VPower) and check your FICM plugs as well
verify cranking rpms are over 150
check cam/crank sync and FICM sync
validate the EOT reading

Well usually isn't always exactly. My dummy plug stand pipe issue was clearly a cold soak long crank. Also started hot fine afterwards. I didn't drive it long when my concern showed up. I knew it had not been done and went ahead and did the update. Afterwards it was never an issue either way if it hasn't been done it definitely won't hurt
