From the outside it is tough as most of the blocks are cast with 352 on them. The best way to verify the size is to remove a spark plug and measure the stoke using a rod or dowel.

Here is a list of the most popular FE Engine sizes.

FE/FT engine displacements Displacement Type Bore+0.0036/-0.0000 Stroke+/-0.004

352 cu in (5.8 L) FE 4.0000 in (101.60 mm) 3.500 in (88.9 mm)

360 cu in (5.9 L) FE 4.0500 in (102.87 mm) 3.500 in (88.9 mm)

390 cu in (6.4 L) FE 4.0500 in (102.87 mm) 3.784 in (96.1 mm)

406 cu in (6.7 L) FE 4.1300 in (104.90 mm) 3.784 in (96.1 mm) 410 cu in (6.7 L) FE 4.0500 in (102.87 mm) 3.984 in (101.2 mm) 427 cu in (7.0 L) FE 4.2328 in (107.51 mm) 3.784 in (96.1 mm) 428 cu in (7.0 L) FE 4.1300 in (104.90 mm) 3.984 in (101.2 mm)

You HAVE to measure the stroke. If you can't, just bet on it being a 360.

If the oil pan is off you can also just look at the casting number on the crank.

I don't know how accurate this is, but if the engine is out here is something else you can check

The 352 is a foundry mark, has nothing to do with the actual engine size, because all FE engines were cast as 352's.

It might be a 352, but it could also be a 360, 390, or a 410 or 428.

On sale day, 352/360's magically become 390's!

Measure the stroke to verify engine size: 352/360: 3.50" / 390: 3.78."
