I have looked in the forum and didn't find the exact answer to my question. I bought my 65 F100 in March, the speedo bounces. I looked at the gear on the end, doesn't look bad, but thought I would change it out anyway. The truck originally came with the three speed tranny, (on the tree), somewhere someone changed it out to the T-18 four speed, with the granny gear. The parts catalog shows two different ends between the three speed and the four speed. Is it possible that someone changed the tranny and put the original speedo gear back in? The one on it right now, looks like the one for the three speed....and would that make it act the way its acting? Thanks for all the help. This forum is so handy working on these trucks. Merry Christmas!!!
The cable might need a lube. You can remove the whole thing, soak it gas or similar, clean it well, apply the appropriate graphite lubricant, and then reinstall it, Did it last week on bro's Cadillac, fixed the jumpy needle. If it turns out you need a new speedo head, they're not hard to find.

As Eric suggested, remove speedo cable and inspected, may find only needs maintenance? Once the retainer clip is remove the drive gear comes off and the cable can be removed from the housing. Initiated a similar thread when I had to replace the cable on my 65 with the T-18. Found the speedo end piece snapped where it inserts into the speedo. With Bills (number's dummy) help I purchased the cable that met my application and a gear that matched the original.

Inside the speedo cable housing is a woven steel core that needs to be lubed every so often. When the lube dries out, the woven steel core binds up and eventually snaps.
Auto parts stores sell a woven steel core kit. Cut to length, coat with a fine film of graphite, install in the housing.
Originally white lithium grease was used, so if the original core hasn't snapped, it will need to be cleaned before the graphite is installed.
3 speed manual, Warner T-18 & NP435 4 speeds use a nylon speedo DRIVEN gear (end of the cable). Same 1960's/90's cars and trucks, 16 thru 21 teeth are available from Ford & auto parts stores.
