Greeting Guys, My speedometer on my 1986 F250 4X4 doesn't work. I pulled the dash and the speedo cable from the speedo and at the tranny. The cable is good. It spins free and when I turn the cable with my fingers the speedo works fine. Nice and smooth. The little plastic gear that came out of the tranny on the end of the speedo cable looks great. I am thinking the mate to the gear inside the tranny is either missing or tore up. My question is ... how do I find out if the mate to the gear inside the tranny is gone or ate up and if so how do I replace it and where can I get one. Orielly's is no help at this point. Any advice or thought from you guys would be greatly appreciated.
BTW...I have been lurking and reading this forum a lot lately since joining and man I have to say...I have learned alot and I mean alot...Just haven't found anything to help me with my speedo.
Any chance that the "square hole" that the speedo cable goes into, inside the plastic gear is chewed up? Did the speedo work before? I had to replace my plastic gear, the one that went into my transfercase because the post on the end broke off. I think it broke off because the speedo cable was binding some. I would suspect that if the gear inside the tranny was tore up, the plastic gear would be chewed. The gear in the tranny could be missing, but why would it be? When you spun that cable, did you grab it from the tranny end and have someone watch the speedo for you? Could be that the inner part of the speedo cable did not engage the square hole in the speedo. Had that happen to me before too.
Another possibility, the cable may not have been fully seated in the back of the speedo unit. Certainly wouldn't be the first time I have seen a non-functional speedo caused by the cable being not fully seated in the speedo head.
Thanks guys I will check out the seating and the female parts of the gears to make sure they are not rounded off. I didn;t think of that.
Yeah the speedo works when I turn the cable by hand at the tranny end. It may be where the cable seats at the tranny.
