Rear Axel ID

VIN plate says this is a 3.92 gear ratio, it's out of a 1954 Ford F100. What rear end this is? Also, is it worth rebuilding, or would I be better off replacing it? I plan on putting a large cubic inch small block in front of it, so there will be a lot more oomph than the old engine.

Thanks in advance!!
Brian

That is not the original rear differential for your '54. What you have there is a Ford 9". The good news is, you can do almost anything with it. From limited slip to almost any gear ratio.

The original would be a Dana 44. It would look like this:

Thank you

Thanks Effie!!

Do you know how I can find out more about this rear end? Is there some sort of identifier that would show make/model/part? I would imagine it could use at least a fresh set of bearings.

I honestly don't know that much about the 9". I've never owned one.

Unfortunately it's missing the axle tag, which would tell you everything. Without it I'm not much help.

The 9 inch will handle the larger cu.in. SBF fine. Since you have the rear end out of the truck then it will be a simple matter to open it up and get the answers you seek. It is a large bearing housing which is a good thing. You can measure the flange to flange width right now, this is a good data point to have for the future. When the axles are pulled you can count the splines...probably a 28 spline. Ring and pinion gears can now be accessed so that you can calculate the ratio. Pinion shaft seal is leaking and based on the general condition of the rear end you will probably want to do a complete rebuild on it. Good luck...

See if this helps. I’d bet it’s from a 70ish F-100.

Thanks everyone!! Charlie, you are right, it's a 28 spline. And I was able to ID it using BJ's link and moejr read the ID correctly. I ordered new axles with 5-4.5 bolt pattern to match the front discs. Off to get it rebuilt....

Brian I did not read BJ's article all the way but there is another on here that I have found great to use. I did the same thing you are doing. 57 thur 72 are the nine inch to use as they are plug and play. I have around 11 hundred in mine that is all new from end to end except axle and backing plates. I also put a yukon trac lock in mine and the only reason I did that is because the trucks are so light you spin on wet grass not that I drive on wet grass every day but I had it apart so what the heck.BJ I have it in and running. Brain I hope this helps .

This is the casting number prefix (C7AW) off the carrier. It doesn't help much considering this carrier was used on 1967/79 F100's, Passenger Cars, Bronco's and 1969/74 E200's.

If from an F100 with 28 spline axle shafts, it could be from a 1967 or 1968/72. 1953/67's have 11" x 1 3/4" rear brakes. 1968/72's have 11" x 2 1/4" rear brakes.

The 28 spline axle shafts (B7TZ-4234-A 1957/67 F100 or C8TZ-4234-A 1968/72 F100) are the same right/left. The others have right & left specific axle shafts.

These F100's, Bronco's and E200's have 5 lug wheels on a 5.50" bolt circle. Cars w/9" could have 5 lug wheels on a 4.50" or 5.00" bolt circle.

Beginning 1973, Ford increased the width between the inner frame rails behind the cab from 33 1/2" (used thru 1972) to 37 1/2" on F100's, 1975 F150's.
