2005 6.0 computer memory codes

Having some issues(engine stall). The mechanic says he can't pinpoint the code because the PCM is not showing any memory. Motor shut down while driving at 8:50 am, 12/19/17. When I had it towed to his shop, all codes were ok and the truck started, but he had no way of reading what happened at the specific time of failure. Can this comp issue be fixed?

Does this mechanic normally work on diesels?

Yes, they do a lot of diesels, including small/medium commercial trucks, Ford 6.0's, etc. He says it might be the FICM fuel ICM. When he does his check, he says all codes come up ok. Truck has had this issue twice in 1 week. While driving 25-30 mph, the engine shuts off. Plenty of power from the battery's, but motor won't turn over. When it get's to his shop, he says it starts after a couple tries.

I'm going to order a pre-programmed scan gauge ll from bullet proof diesel today. But it won't get to me until early next week with the holiday. As it is now, I don't feel confident driving the truck with this issue.

Don’t expect the SGII to read the codes it’s more of a monitor. Get torque pro or FORScan for your phone and get a Bluetooth/WiFi elm obd adapter

I had him put in a new injection drive module. He said that was the likely culprit.
I misunderstood his comments on memory codes. He said he can't "go back in time" and see what code was triggered when the failure occurred. He did a couple test runs with his laptop but all codes were good. I've got the truck now and it's fine.... fingers crossed.

Can you give me more details? If a code malfunctions, the scan gauge won't show it? I'm looking for a device that will pinpoint a failure when it occurs.

The scangauge will read the codes only if you have a CEL light on. The SGII is a good daily driving monitor to watch how things are performing. Another option is to download an app to your phone like ForScan lite or torque pro. These apps are better for reading engine codes that are stored with no CEL light on.
These apps are $5-10 dollars and an elm adapter is around $20. If you have an iPhone you will need a WiFi adapter and use ForScan. Android user can use a Bluetooth adapter and torque pro.
I have a SGII that I use daily because it’s easy to use I can leave it plugged in and turn the key and go. But if the need arises I also have ForScan to read codes if necessary because it will read TCM,ABS, PCM, instrument cluster codes etc.
The downfall to using the phone apps for daily driving is you have to connect to the truck each time.

Does not sound like a FICM failure to me so you will just have to see.

Also the SGII won't show any of the other DTCs that can be hiding in the system.
For that you need something that can like FiznUKa is talking about or one of the big
boys Ford,Snap-on, Matco and so on. Even the AE will show 99% is it had the Ford bundle.

The mechanic said their were other possible causes, but he has seen failures with the FICM in vehicles going over 150,000. He said the circuitry can start to break down and will cause intermittent failure. Your thoughts?
I'll look into some of the other devices for reading codes.

If no hard code was set it could be a bad, chaffed wire. Usually component failures will set a hard code.

I am thinking about the one issue where the truck will quit and
then you get a cluster sweep for starters.

I don't recall who had the info about that one.

You may have something there. They do diesels, but seems like not too many Fords(lots of box trucks, Internationals). Took it to another shop yesterday after it stalled again, the day after Christmas.
This is a AAA shop and all their tow trucks are Fords. They said they will nail it down.

It's gotta get bullet proofed. This mechanic has done several over the past few years, knows the Ford diesels real well. Oil cooler, HPOP, and other things need to be upgraded. He says it doesn't look like any internal engine parts are damaged. At 194,000+ plus miles, he says it 'hit the wall'.
I have an Endurance warranty and a 10% AAA discount, so hopefully the cost is not gonna kill me. He's getting back with me on final price #'s.

You have the new style High Pressure Pump in the system
and they really don't fail so don't let they sell you an upgrade for that.
Just do the new Stand Pipes and Dummy Plugs and STC fitting.
