I've got a 2005 F250 6.0 with little over 217,000. Was going to change fuel filters today since but the truck beat me to it. Quit on me in traffic after riding around most of the morning. Just like you turned off the key or fuel just shut off. Happened so fast didn’t really pay attention. Replaced filters, main filter some dirty but not bad. Cranked right up, drove around every where’s for a couple hours no problems. On the way home less that quarter mile from house same DAMN thing. got a tow home. NO CODEs, no check engine light. It acts like its trying to pick up fuel and crank. You can hear pump kick in and prime at the tank and at the frame filter.
Anybody have suggestions other than burning and claiming insurance, just kidding. Prior to this changed filters around 2000 miles ago.
What did you use to look for codes? If you read up on this issue with the 6.0, you will see you need to get some type of monitoring device to look at numerous sensor outputs.
Has any work been done previously?
Things to look for are injector pressures, IPR %, voltage readings for the FICM, etc. There are probably a couple of codes stored too, you just dont have the correct tool to read them.
A buddy of mine brought his scan tool up the first time and plugged in. Could not tell you what kind.
I've done EGR cooler upgrade, oil cooler, HPOP fitting upgraded, standpipes upgrade, turbo oil tubes replaced, couple of injector's, Diesel tech Don's rebuilt FICM, and ICP sensor about 3 years ago. Blue spring upgrade this past October.
With a scanner on the truck, record the ICP or high pressure oil pressure during cranking, and IPR%, and post it here. Also see if it has cam/crank sync and FICM sync during cranking, and what the RPM is.
Unplugged the ICP sensor and the truck cranked right up. Idles smooth, but now has some light blue smoke out the exhaust pipe when reviving up the engine. Called what few truck repair shops are around here trying to get it in and looked at more in depth. Everyone booked up till after 1st of the year.
A little update on my truck. Went to a diesel truck shop last week to have them look at my truck and scan it the whole 9 yards. Got there and Shop doors closed, music blaring, called and left a couple of messages especially after I had talked to them the day before and they knew I was coming there. Waited 2 hours and they still no shows and I have yet received a phone call from them. Left on the way home stopped at another repair shop closer to home and they scanned the truck. Only thing they showed up was that ICP and a low fuel pressure code. Cleared those and reconnected the ICP and rechecked. ICP reading over 500, but fuel pressure code popped back up. They recommended replacing the fuel pump which I did last weekend. Made appointment with local Ford dealer to have it checked out on their machine and tech’s. I asked them even before they started if they could print me out the readings, they told me they didn’t have a way to do that. I even asked if they could at least right stuff down for me. Long story short I didn’t get squat besides a bill and they said only thing that had shown up was a turbo overboost/underboost. They recommended replacing the turbo. Never had issues before, not saying there could or could not have been. So took it for a little spin today, not hauling or pulling anything. Boost gauge only shown one overboost then back down to normal around 20ish. I was only driving 60. Started acting up again, losing power, pulled over and oil came out of my crank case breather some. I shut the truck off and tried calling for a tow home. Truck still beside the road in the next state. So question(s) is I guess a replacement turbo? Anything else I need to look for/do?
Would it be safe to drive home slowly if I took my time and unhook the turbo boost or just have the dern thing hauled in?
I’m about done with this truck !!!
Man, it sounds like you’ve got a few things maybe going on.
When you say oil cane out of the crankcase breather, do you mean a bunch cane out or...? Because unless you’ve done a ccv mod it breathes into the turbo air intake
Couple things confuse me.
My 6.0 has no fuel pressure sensors, not sure how it can produce a code for that?
I don’t recall see a PID for fuel pressure in my Forscan app either.
Did you check oil level when you noticed the crank vent overflowing?
Perhaps fuel is dumping past an injector and leaking into the oil?
Not a good idea to drive it.
And you need to get a tool to monitor your sensors.
You need to get ForScan or Toque Pro and quit listening and start doing. Unless you post codes everyone is guessing. I would hate to spend a couple of thousand throwing parts at it when a $5.00 app and a $30.00 elm adapter might tell me it’s a $100.00 problem
I'd say first, have a nice cold one or a glass of wine, kick back and count your blessings. Then, simply hook up a decent instrument (your pick) to check things
