Another morning hard start

This started about a month ago. First crank of the day, truck fires, then it feels as if starved for fuel and dies. I have to cycle the key 4 or 5 times and crank excessively before it will start and run. If I let it set for 8 hours or so during they day, it usually starts the first time but stumbles a little but before smoothing out. I have figured out that as long as I park with the front end down hill, it will start fine. I would think there is an issue with the high pressure oil pump or the low pressure oil pump. There is supposed to me some information and video on this but I can't find it. My truck is a 2003 6.0 with 128K, March 03 build date. I have changed the oil and fuel filters, and cleaned the egr valve. I can't be the only one who has had this issue. I hope someone can chime in and help me. Thanks.

How long ago did you change the fuel filters? Hopefully you used the real Ford (or International) filters. Those cheap "will fit" filters are real bad for the 6.0. Have you had the codes read? Don't need a CEL to have codes.

I just changed the filters. I buy my fuel filters from International. It is not throwing any codes. I am thinking of having it scanned to see if anything shows up. I thought I would try here because I can't be the only one that has expierenced this.

Have you tried the FICM voltage test in AM after cold soak

try this

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...procedure.html

also check Baterys load test and alternator output voltages

The FICM controls the injectors

Oil Filter motocraft????

I have not checked the FICM because it did not throw the code. I was going to last Saturday but the guy (6.0 mechanic) said he did not think it was the FICM but has to do with the high or low pressure oil pump since it starts fine when parked down hill thus keeping the oil pump filled. I guess I could try to check the FICM myself.

Yes on the oil filter.

Some gauges would be a Great Start

A scan gauge picks up FICM and HPO

and would eliminate things fast

Are there any Ford Techs out there who have seen this type of issue? I hope one of you will chime in. Having to park with the front end facing down hill for it to start the first time has to be a clue on what the problem may be.

Thanks for the response. A futher explanation would be helpful. Do you think this would this show up if I had it scanned? I am thinking that may be the simplest thing to do to pinpoint the problem.

I knew I couldn't be the only who has experienced this issue. Hopefully some more will chime in information on how to resolve it.

Yeah mine will fire off then die. When I go to crank it again it will take 5 to 10 seconds to fire up. The oil pressure gauge wont read anything until about halfway through cranking it. Wish I had some better gauges. Think a Scangauge 2 is in my future for my truck.

there is a thread that is a few pages long with video maybe someone can with good search skill can find it. diag is not always so basic as hook up a computer and letting it tell you what you need. sometime you have to work to get the info. as far as scan tool diag goes. not much of it for this type of concern.
