You say you have a C-4, so you must have a 240/300, or a 302 and it is 2wd. The C-4 can be exchanged for a C-6, but IIRC, the C-6 is about 11" longer, or thereabouts. You will have to shorten the driveshaft the required amount, or find a C-6 shaft, and the shift linkage might have to be exchanged for an FE C-6 set. The SBF pattern C-6 can be found in 80's trucks and Econo's. Why do you want a C-6? If going to that trouble, why not go OD with an AOD, or with an electronic controller-controlled AODE/4R70W. If you still want the strength of the C-6, step up to an E4OD/4R100.
Rich is not wrong, but.....
Tell us what engine you have. C4 is typically a small block tranny and a C6, well it varies but is usually for a big block or FE engine.
If you have a small block, O/D tranny will be the way to go.
I’m not the trans guru, but others here are. I would encourage you to run an overdrive trans. There are a few that have em and work and run the hell out of em.

1978 was the first year that the C6 was available with 300/302, but the C4 was also available thru 1981.
I once replaced an AOD with a C6 on a 86 Crown Victoria. I also had to replace the fly wheel because there is supposed to be a different off set.
The Ford parts guys on this site should be able help with this.
