I think I have decided on a Ruger 10/22. Personaly the idea of a bolt action rifle seems a bit clunky. It's auto loading but i don't have any interest in hunting so that won't be a problem. I like that it has a lot of after market options. I plan on going with the stainless finish with synthetic stock. Just for the sake of easy maintenence. In order to get an FID you have to take a basic firearm safty class, luckily a family friend is an instructor.

Anything i should know about the 10/22? About how much should I pay for one?

My first rifle was a Winchester 9422 lever action .22, which I got second hand almost 20 years ago. I have fired ten's of thousands of rounds through it & it has never let me down. It is a fun rifle to shoot, you can put 16 rounds through it from the hip in around 7 seconds, a little faster than a bolt action.

The Mod. 81 was a great .22 and was also my first rifle. I still have it only it now wears a scope. The brand on mine though says Marlin. I think I paid $31.00 for it at Sears..
For novice target shooting I would still go with a Marlin bolt, tube feed..I don't care for a clip .22...You spend more time reloading than shooting... For general plinking fun I use a Ruger 10/22..

I have a 10-22 also. Ruger makes good weapons. Get a good scope and you'll have a lot of years of enjoyment with it. And if you are interested, there are some nice additions you can add to it to make it really nice.... such as a bull barrel, composit stock, etc. Most after market shops have lots of specialty items for any rifle.

Jerry - I posted that "You never forget", but now you've got me thinking maybe it was a Marlin, I do remember the 81DL part for sure. Oh well, it was a long time ago. I do remember that we lived on a 550 acre ranch and I had a horse and that rifle and that was a great time for me.
