Next time it will probably be $500. This is just another trick to get fewer people willing to go thru all the hoops to exercise their right to bear arms.

Glad we don't have to have them.
My first rifle I bought was a Remington Model 710 .270 caliber... Not a plinking gun.lol
I own a Savage Bolt Action .22 w/ a 3x9x40
I also own a Ruger 10/22 with a 3x9x40
Both are pretty accurate... but the Savage is dead on at about any range... I love that gun.
Nobody listed the Savage yet, but I like it
10 round magazine (mini banana shaped)
and Its black synthetic
Pretty good looking gun, especially w/ a scope on it
And one of the most accurate .22s ive shot
And they run about 100 bucks

I know a gunsmith that loves Savage firearms, particularly the barrel and actions.

While I don't agree that the actions are superior to anything else out there, the barrels are. They are hardened prior to milling and after. Consequently they have a tremendous wear life. Which is very good for any competition shooting, where a shooter may easily go through 10,000 cartridges per year. Since a new barrel would behave differently than the one they practiced with, it makes pretty good sense to stick with a good barrel.

I guess that applies to stock firearm shooting, some of those shooters don't leave anything stock on their guns. Ever seen a really tricked out 1911, not just for Hondas anymore.

If you have to pay 100 bux every four years just to keep a rifle, I'd get a center fire. Check out the Henry rifle Web site

www.henryrepeating.com

They make a line of lever actions as well as bolt and a copy of the AR-7 surivel rifle. They will send you a free catalog for just asking.

Ruger M77's are excellent rifles, mine is very accurate. You can get a hold of one for about 425 (new). I would look for a used one for your first.

I'd agree with several of the posters here. Go bolt action. For inexpensive, I'd look at both Marlin, and Savage. Savage bolts are a bit clunky, but tight. Never seen a chambering problem from them and they have large locking lugs. Marlin... heck, they just make decent rifles all around.

If you start looking at other manufacturers, you may just wish to step up to a bolt action, center fire rifle. Not as cheap to shoot, but accurate, and you can get much greater distance.

Please take a firearms safety course though. Firearms owners already catch enough heat. Don't need anymore fuel to the fire by having inexperienced mistakes.

Enjoy the world of shooting.

ditto

I got a SS 30-06 laminated wood stock and my father has a 25-06, both are extremely acurate.

Only thing I don't like is the heavy trigger they have.

You never forget that first rifle, mine was 58 years ago and it was a Remington model 81DL bolt action with a tube mag. My best .22 was a Winchester pump I bought at a police auction for $10, would fire shorts, longs and long rifle mixed as fast as you could pump it without ever failing. My son has a Ruger and a Browning and I like the Browning best.

Mine (ruger m77) is a 25-06 REM. it will put three shots into a half inch circle at 150 yards. thats good enough to kill anything that I point it at. I have a Leupold Vari-X III 3-9x X 40x. I love it, almost no recoil, accurate, common case (same as .270 and .30-06) so its cheap to reload with easily found brass.

Jump off the deep end -

Get yourself a Remington 700, and don't look back.

Learn it the right way first - you will not be disappointed.

Yes the Rem 700 is a good gun too. My dad has one in 7MM REM Ultra Mag. shoots super flat out to 500 yards and still packs in almost 2000 Ft/Lbs. It broke a 1 inch steel plate at 300 yards. I wish i had a picture of the plate. Dang.

One option that nobody has mentioned is getting an air rifle. If you've never handled a quality air rifle, you will be surprised at what they can do. Here's one site (http://www.gamo-airguns.com/Products.htm). You can go with a high-power sporter and give up a little accuracy or go with a lower power target version.

My first rifle was a German made Wischo 77. That was in the late 1960s and cost around $100. I took a lot of rabbits and squirrels with that rifle. I still have it and it still works well.
