I am considering getting my FID card and purchasing a rifle. I'd just like to use it for plinking interest in hunting. I am thinking about something chambered foe .22 but don't know. Can anyone recommend a good first value priced rifle?
A .22 is a good starter rifle. Cheap to shoot and maintain.
IMO, for value you can't beat a Marlin. They have been around for many years and offer several different models of .22 rifles. They are well made and very accurate.
my 22's are all great ruger 10/22 marlin model 60 just remember semi autos reload and recock themselves so extra caution besides regular gun safety rules
I've got a Ruger 10/22 - great rifle, cheap to shoot and maintain. I'm looking into getting a Marlin .22 with the tubular magazine - I've never used one, but the tubular mag seems like it would be easier to use than the Ruger mags.
You can't go wrong with a .22 - get an autoloader, though - bolt action is boooooring
Dittio on the Bolt action. Most are made very poorly for bigger hands. I love Ruger 10/22's. You can't go wrong with all the aftermarket support. Just about every competition .22 rifle shooter uses one too. The equivalent Thompson Center .22 is almost $400 but the ruger is $179.
I have a ruger 10/22 great gun you might think of the new .17 much faster and better for longer ranges. There not as cheap to shoot but you get twice the performance and there great for small game
i have a marlin .22 bolt action and its great, it will nail at thumb tack at 100+ yards, got a biggame scope on it. its probly 40 years old. and havent had any major problims with it.
As far as the .22 goes, I would recommend a bolt action. They have a simple design that is not prone to misfeeds. I also think that beginner shooters benefit more from bolt/pump actions than from semi-autos.
thats what i was raised on, was a single shell marlin bolt action 22 and alabama is right, you learn to make your shots count so you dont have to reload so many shells to hit what you are aiming at...
This a quote I got from my local police office's web page
"In Massachusetts, in order to lawfully purchase, possess, or transport a rifle or shotgun (not a large-capacity gun), or to purchase or possess ammunition, ammunition components, or defense sprays, you must have a Firearms Identification Card (FID)."
Being the pinko "bastid" i am I am willing to put up with it. Just wish i didn't have to get it renewed every four years. It used to be 25 bucks every four years, now it's 100.
