Well I was able to start the truck, not sure why it would not start when i posted last. It was a great feeling to start it. And drive it. This truck has not moved under its own power in 20 years. Now i am confident enough to finish the build. Thanks for the help.

Outstanding! It's a great feeling of accomplishment init?

Now that the participation trophy has been awarded, I gotta ask if the "new" condenser you talked about is just another POS from the 'Zone or whatever? Because they won't work. They won't work.

Did I mention they won't work? That includes intermittent, like the problem you mention. Or, it will leave you stranded somewhere.

Just find a condenser that's the same age +/- 10 years as yer truck. It will last forever pretty much.

It is a "POS from the 'Zone or whatever" I had no choice, but will start looking for a better one. Its interesting, I was "home" where i grew up in upstate new york. My uncle and i went to a auto parts store who employs guys who worked on these vehicles. He asked me the vin number. This question was not asked when i bought the last condenser. Maybe it made a difference, maybe not. He did not have one, but he educated me.

So where would i find a good one?

For NOS and NORS parts that auction site is pretty good. Ignition and electrical parts especially, Autolite or Motorcraft is always preferable over aftermarket stuff made today from you know where. Starter solenoids and headlight switches for example. The parts stores have them in stock yet and only cost a few bucks though just like the case with modern manufacture condensers they are junk and usually fail right away. In the case of points & condensers, your friendly Ford dealer still stocks the good stuff I'm told.

Hmmm, am I missing something here? I went back and read everything twice again. What was the final finding on cause of problem.
I was waiting for someone to mention a 'bad ignition'. An engine starting but than shutting down once you release the key to the run position, is generally a sign of a bad ignition.
"Of course I'm just an old fart and most likely have no idea what I'm talking about."
Anyway, let's hope the problem is solved.

Thanks for asking. The engine was almost starting, not quite, was what i was trying to say. I am convinced it was the condenser. This is the second condenser in less than one month. Prior to me installing the latest condenser, i did not have great spark. I now see the difference with the new one.

I am currently looking for a ford or autolite condenser. If i am unsuccessful in finding one, i will go to electronic ignition, only because i dont want to keep looking for good condensers.

Or Standard Ignition products. Anything made in the 1960s or 1970s. There are still millions out there sitting on a shelf or in a drawer. Where are you looking? Ebay has them. Your local Ford dealer still carries both points and condenser. The condenser should last pretty much forever.

local ford dealer did not have any. they said books only go to 1980. I can try some older ford dealers i guess. I can look on ebay, but i am not sure i can be positive they are old. I know if it says autolite or ford, that it would be good. Other than than that i may get junk again. I will look for an older ford dealer locally.

Thanks

It's easy to tell. They are in old style boxes and packaging. Search "Vintage Ford Ignition Condenser" or "Ford Ignition Tuneup Kit" etc etc. Don't use el-cheapo points either.

One option is what they call a Distributor Repair Kit.

It's really just the rotor, points and condenser - whereas the tune-up kit also includes the spark plugs and a few other goodies.

This would be the applicable kit for your 240, I believe, but double-check that given the options on your particular truck.

I dont want to beat a dead horse but, My ford parts CD says that the correct condenser is a 7RA 12300-C (DC-6). I do not have Thermactor. It does not ask for my distributor number. Why then does the local auto store ask which distributor i have?

because your parts guy knows nothing about a car and has no book, so he has to follow the prompts on his computer program.

The 1975 MPC is a bit weak on the tune-up kits. Notice no entry for a 352, for example. One thing to keep in mind is the load-o-matic distributor uses different components than the dual-advance distributor. The 1966 Shop Manual has pictures and you can visibly see they are not the same part for the condenser. They have different mounting brackets than each other, at the least.
