I just traded my 2014 Super Duty on a 2017 Super Duty! Love it as I did it’s predecessor. I’m in the process of making it mine. I’m installing my dash camera and want to hardware it so it only comes on when the truck is running. I plugged and unplugged it into the cigarette lighter in my old truck. I don’t want to do that on this truck. Where would be an easy safe place to pick up power under the dash? I don’t feel it needs to be on an up-fitter switches.
Up fitter is easiest, but you could also just take from an accessory on circuit in the main fuse box. Or you could take it from the back of the 12 volt power point in the dash, or trace back to the fuse block, and tap in there.
Is your power plug a true 12 volt source, or is it stepped down. The sat radio power actually steps down to 5 volts, you should just check your charger port output at the plug to be sure.
If it is a apsteo down you need to plug in to a 12 volt plug behind the dash and wire from there. Just electrical tape together and you have the proper voltage and current to not harm your cam.
I installed a female 12 plug under the passenger kick panel, connected to #22 that is hot when the truck is running. My dash cam plugs into it. That way, if I change out the dash cam, its cable and connector remain intact. It's been working flawlessly for months.
For the Power Magic Pro I am installing, I need both a switched and a keyed 12vdc power source. I'm looking at the array of fuses under the passenger side kick panel and note that there are several in my manual listed as "not used". Yet, there is a fuse in the slot. Anybody already gone to the trouble of checking these "not used" fuses? It seems kind of hard to pin down the switched circuits since so many seem to operate on a delay.
We one, many of those fuse slots are used. Depends on all the options on that beast of a truck. You would have to check for power key on, key off to figure which can be tapped into. There are fuse taps you can buy, or what I think isbetter is using the upfitter switch, you just leave the switch on, and whenever the truck starts it sends power for the camera. Then you also have a way to shut it off (in case you need that).
