My dash cam is supposed to turn on and start recording when the truck is started and stop recording and turn off with the ignition. I have plugged into the accessory plug in the dash. It won't turn off and on. Is there another plug I should be using or do I need to wire it in?
No idea what you are driving but all my 12 volt power ports are always on. I would imagine you need a switched power port to get the cam to turn on and off as you describe.
I ended up wiring one of my 12 volt outlets to one of my upfitter switches for my dash cam. Turns on and off with the truck now and also gives me the option to shut it off if i should ever need to.
On my dash cam you need a "hard wiring kit" Which is just an extra wire that goes to a wire that shuts off with the ignition. (you still need an always on power wire as well) I paid the 29 dollars and it works fine, it switches to park recording after a couple of seconds of shutting off the truck.
Found the wires and wired the camera to one of them. #4 switch. When I turned the key on and hit #4 switch I fried the camera. I don't know if the + - were crossed. HELP!
I cut the plug that goes into accesories and wired it direct. I think the plug reduced the voltage to operate the camera. So much for this one. Will be looking for a new. Any ideas?

That plug doesn't reduce the voltage and if it did, that reduction wouldn't have fried your camera.
I'd look at the wiring diagram again before activating.

I'm shopping for a dash cam myself. The capabilities of the various cams appears to be all over the place, as does the quality.
Right now I am really liking the Black Vue 2-channel, but at nearly $400.00 I'm not sure I really need a rear camera.
At $120.00 the Falcon Zero F170HD+ looks really interesting. You wouldn't have to wire it up either. It uses vehicle motion to start recording.

I'm very happy with the Pioneer ND-BC6, it was just over $100 [new version is BC8]. Nice wide angle, good picture during the day and night [initially I thought the picture was poor, but the next day, when I tried it when the sun was up, it was just the camera doing it's best at night]. It picks up more detail than when I stick my head out the window and look back at night. It also has a single, long cable, so you do all the wiring in the cab. I mated it with a Pioneer AVH-4000NEX, and the right wiring harness adapter for my truck and the install was no problem at all.
However, it's a small cube, which wasn't a problem for my, as I've got a Cab&Chassis with a flatbed, but more difficult to find a good spot for it with a regular pickup bed.
I have a cobra cdr840. It's a pretty good camera that I bought for just over a 100 off amazon. I like the software that cobra provides with it that when you view it on a computer will over lay it in Google maps and provide speed and g's. The only problem I have with it is it's viewing angle is only 117°. I'm planning on moving it to the rear and trying out the falcon for the front. I hear good things about it as well.
