I have a 2011 F350 with 68,500 miles on it. I was cruising down the highway at 75 when it started vibrating and acting like it wasn't running on all cylinders. I took it to the shop and there was a catastrophic failure in cylinder 6. It will cost $17,600 to fix.
Is there a chance Ford will do anything for me since there are known issues with early build motors like mine? I understand that it's 6 years old and out of warranty but it's ridiculous this should happen. I've had all work done at the dealer where I bought the truck.
I guessing I'm SOL. The fact that cylinder issues are a known problem I can't believe they won't help me. I have a 2009 Tacoma with 188,000 miles that was recalled due to frame rust. There was a hole of at least 10mm. As a result they are replacing the frame for free. This is a $15,000 repair on a $6,000 vehicle.
What is the build date of the your truck? If it is before April of 2011, Ford might help. The early 6.7's had problems with the exhaust valve seats "falling out" of the head. Contact the local dealer and see if they will assist you with the issue or give you the regional/district Ford service rep. Ask them, the valve seats are a known issue. Have your VIN, mileage and any other info handy when you talk with the dealer or rep. All they can say is no but might surprise you and offer some assistance.
I assume $17,600 is a dealership estimate? Might be a good idea to ask a local independent shop what the cost would be for a rebuilt or to swap in a junkyard motor.
I know this does not help your situation any; but when dealing with things mechanical everything is a gamble. I have a friend that buys high mileage 6.4’s (ticking time bombs) because he can get them relatively cheap because of their reputation, and has never had a failure with one. Yet he also has a pre ‘08 class A diesel pusher motorhome with a 550HP Cat that does not have a lot of miles on it, and guess what..........yup.......jake brake stuck on it and bent some pushrods, valves, etc. it has been in the shop for 6 weeks and he has no idea what the bill on that one is going to be.
Sorry for your mis-fortune. Hope you can get your ride running again without too much expense. As previously stated....maybe a junkyard engine is your best bet.
I have seen Low Mileage Late Model Engines out of Wrecks on ebay in the $8K Range. My 2011 was built in 04/2010, and I traded it at 58Kmi to avoid the same problem.
