I searched and unfortunately couldn't find as many details as I'd like on this issue.
So there is a cooling problem around cylinder #6, which causes an exhaust valve failure (and possibly the engine). Ok, got that.
Now for the important questions!
Are ALL 99-02 Navigators affected? Hopefully not, so how do I determine the vehicle I'm considering has this problem before it is too late?
Does the problem stay strictly in the head (ie valve stucks a bit), or are there occurances where the valve breaks and smahes the piston (and potentially cracking the sleeve, bending the rod, or even out-of-rounding a crank)?
How is it fixed? Through Ford OEM? Aftermarket?
In case of failure, I guess Ford will not warranty anything on a vehicle with 60k+ miles, but what about an aftermarket warranty? Any idea on cost?
I bet if you can talk to the manager of a dealership's service department, her or she can help. As I recall there was an Oasis report that discussed this in my case. I faintly believe that the problem was corrected on later model heads. The only thing I can suggest is to ask, and then to match the build date of your vehicle with what the report said.
