ABS sensor or VSS?

So the other day I replaced what I thought to be the VSS on the top of the rear on my 96 xlt 4x4. It runs fine when I'm under 45 but past 45 the speedo goes crazy and it bangs the gears. I then looked under the truck and noticed that a little gear oil had come out from around the new sensor. I took it off and tried to seat it better to no avail. I then went back to the parts store and realized that the ABS sensor and VSS sensor are the same part? I then got a replacement for the same part and it's doing the same thing.

Yes and yes.In the earlier years of the 8th gen truck,it was just used as an ABS sensor.'92-97 / 9th gen trucks use this to feed the speedo as well.

Pop it back out and inspect the whole carefully. My guess is,your going to find that where the o-ring is supposed to seal,is full of gunk.Give her a good cleaning and she should be good to go.

If all else fails, you could simply remove the o-ring and lube the sucker up really good with ultra black (high oil resistant) RTV.........The next owner may not appreciate it,come time to replace it but lol but there are pretty good odds of the sensor never failing again in it's lifetime either (as they generally seem to last 20 plus years/couple hundred thousand miles or more) and it's not like it couldn't always be removed. The rear cover would probably need to come off and a large punch and a hammer would always plop the sucker back up and out.Though by that time, that diff may be long replaced anyway. If the truck doesn't get scrapped first.

Make sure you use a motorcraft part. If it's still bad could be a bad PSOM.

I cleaned it out pretty good the second time. I'll crawl back under tomorrow morning. The BWD replacement doesn't look like the replacement, similar but not the same. I just ordered a Motorcraft replacement to see if that works.

Another possibility is foreign matter in the diff / lube, getting between the teeth of the reluctor (tone ring) on the ring gear.

BWD -- Breaks When Driven.... - Generally, any sensor that ultimately feeds data to the PCM (in this case, it's indirectly, but it still applies), you're better off with OEM.

Motorcraft OEM replacement fixed the problem. Don't get the aftermarket replacements
