Snorkel "stove"

My '71 F100 has a rebuilt 390 4v (from a car, I assume) with an Edelbrock carb and headers. The air cleaner snorkel does not have a "stove" to pipe warm air from the manifold to the carb. I've only owned it for a couple of months, but I'm quickly realizing that if I'm going to drive it in the winter, I need to do something about this situation (I live in Colorado, BTW). Here's a pic:

So what do I need to install? Do I need to fabricate something, since I have headers? Any help for this newb is appreciated!

I don't think the factory stove will fit around those headers. I understand the need to want to get that set up back to factory stds, but, you may have a tough time with those headers. If it were me, I would probably just start it and let it warm up naturally. May take a few minutes longer, but, once it's warm, you should be good to go.

I don't have mine hooked up either, and it runs fine. My impression was always that they those devices are over-rated, but, I am willing to listen to others opinions. Was always curious about that contraption. Seemed pretty complicated for what it did, and somewhat problematic with the snorkel vacuum motor, and all.

I'm not interested in returning the engine to factory standards. The truck came with a 360 originally, anyway, so I'm good with modifications like the Edelbrock 4 barrel and the headers. I would like it not to be so cold-blooded, however. My understanding is that the valve on the factory hot air snorkels opens up automatically with the heat of the air coming from the exhaust manifold, without any sort of vacuum or electric motor. I have the stock manual choke, which I'm okay with.

I don't depend on my F100 for transportation, since I have two other good, newer vehicles. I just love driving it, and my commute is only a few miles, so I like to drive it to the office on a regular basis. If I have to warm it up longer, or even let it sit on very cold mornings, no problem. But if there's a fairly simple and cheap way to make it less cold-blooded, I'd love to do it.

A good thermostat helps. 195°F will warm up quicker.

They sell kits:

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/hed-24513/overview/

But as you can see, they are pretty minimal and require some "fine tuning" to actually fit on to your header in such a way that you would actually get some hot air to the carb. I think you could fabricate one with the tubing and what's left of the original set up that's on the under side of your air cleaner inlet.

Thanks for the info. It almost looks like I could fabricate something like it out of a dryer vent hose and a couple of hose clamps!

That is basically the same kit you had to have when smogging a smog motor in Ca. When installing headers.

If ya gotta

If you really want to put the ol'e heater hose contraption back in place.... But I believe it to be inefficient and ineffective and its usually the first thing to go when headers and a 4b carb go on... With a 195 stat your FE heats up pretty quickly, I know mine does. I put an engine block heater in mine when I had the block out of the truck and it works like a champ..... But half the time I dont even plug it in.... My vote would be to not bother with the manifold heat to carb mess..... unless your in it for the novelty or smog requirements...

How about something like this:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Flexible-Ad...4383.l4275.c10

Adhere to the snorkel with a switch or thermostat.
