running off headers

Is it not a good idea for an engine to run off just headers? Someone told me you can burn the exhaust valves out of it whats the story

from what I have been told, that is true....you can put about 2 or 3 feet of pipe and will be ok, but with open headers, it can suck cold air up on deceleration and warp a valve....

nah, your engine doesnt suck on deceleration. If you get a piece of metal really hot and instantly throw it in the freezer it gonna warp right. For heads, your pretty much gonna have to hav that perfect gust of wind of real cold air that blow hard enough in the exact perfect direction to make its way through the pipes to your exhaust valve. It got to be god and cold and fast too because your headers are very hot and will quickly warm air.

yup. old wives tale told by cops to get you to put a muffler on. back when i was a kid, my 66 W200 power wagon only had open headers for 6 years. it had over 400,000 miles on it before the cab fell off. the engine is still in use today in a water pump on the farm, and it still has open headers so you can hear if it dies.
