My a/c/heater fan blower only works on the highest speed now which is annoying. It just started doing this. I've never replaced the blower motor resistor or the switch. I did replace the fan blower a few years ago. I got a new Motorcraft resistor but I don't want to just replace just because I've got a new one. I want to fix the problem. What does this usually indicate? Last week all speeds were working now only the highest.
I had a 98 Ranger with the same issue (mine worked on the two fastest speeds). I had already replaced the resistor once. This time the connector had melted. I cut the connector off, leaving enough of the wires so that I would have a color code. I then put individual wire ends on and plugged each wire into the resistor individually. I gave the truck away last April with 272,500 miles on it. I kept the old connector in case I ever needed the color code to replace the resistor again.
I replaced the resistor block on my '98 Ranger about a month ago. These resistor blocks are located in an area on the firewall that can pick up moisture and start to corrode. The proper way to repair these is to replace the resistor block and also solder on a new resistor block connector. There are a few videos on U-Tube to show you how to do it. Also consider that your old motor might be drawing too many amps for the resistor block to handle.
It was the resistor. I replaced it with a Motorcraft one and it works fine. I didn't solder anything. I just cleaned the connector real good and packed it with some dielectric grease to keep the moisture out.
