Finally was able to get back to my Ranger. I bought a new blower resistor bank/pack, and went to change out the bad one. It appears that the connector may have been the problem. Part of the plastic housing was melted, and when I went to take it off the resistor pack, the internal connections just fell apart. So, I need to replace the connector as well.
I found what I need, at least think what I need, on Amazon. Genuine Motorcraft part. Has anyone replaced the connector as well? Since this is supposed to be a Motorcraft part, I assume it's a quality part?
I had the same problem with my 98 Ranger. I only had high and low speed left on my fan. I bought a new resistor (several years ago) and when I started to change it out, I found that the connector was melted. I was able to save enough of the old connector to get the color code of the wires. I simply used new crimp on connectors and put each wire in place individually instead of using the factory connector. I put the new resistor on a shelf for future use. When I was finished, my fan worked fine. The new resistor is still in its box on the shelf.
I thought of doing that since my time is very limited to play with anything but the big trucks.
I didn't because I was concerned with corrosion problems due to salt spray off the Michigan down state roads. I just went ahead and ordered a new pigtail from these guys. The leads appear to be colour coded, plus it was a lot less than the Motorcraft, although even that one wouldn't have broken the bank. We shall see if it's a quality item or not.
I am working on a 1994 Ranger that only had one blower speed. I went to replace the resistor pack and two of the pins were rusted off and in the connector. I order a new connector, Standard brand, from RockAuto.com and it only had four wire on it. The vehicle currently has five wire going to the connector. There were tow orange/black wires going to one of the pins. Has anyone else run into this? Did you just butt splice the two wire to the one on the new pigtail?
Mine just came with four wires. You say you had two wires with same colour code going to same pin? Manufacturers flaw maybe? I just don't know. Possibly use just one, and throw the other away?
The connector that I was referring to with the two wires of the same color going one pin is the connector that is currently installed on the vehicle. It does not appear that it has been replaced previously either. That is why I am rather confused. I am also a little hesitant to splice the two wire to the one because I am not sure how much amperage is going thru each wire.

Thanks for your help!
If you don't have a Chiltons to look at the wiring schematic, go on Autozone site and sign up, and you can look at repair manuals free. I do that all the with about 5 cars I take care of...
So it's the female end of the connector, the one hard wired into the trucks wiring harness? I think I'd look up a wiring diagram and trace down those wires. It's weird you'd have two wires with the same colour code, coming out the same harness.
Maybe if you were to peel back the harness sheathing a little bit, you might get a better picture of what's going on. I can't help with the diagram, but someone here should be able to.

Whoa there, first I'd heard of that. Excellent idea. On the Chiltons though, their wiring diagrams have always seemed wrong to me for some reason. I know for sure their fuse block diagram for my BII is definitely wrong.
Thanks for the wiring diagram. It does appear that the org/blk wire is spliced together. I will have to pull the harness cover back and see if there is another splice and where the wires are going.
Finally got a chance to work on the Ranger again. I spliced the two wires together to the one wire coming from the new connector and connected the rest of the wires to there corresponding wires. Started the truck up and the heater blower worked correctly again (all speeds as selected). I would recommend to anyone else who has the two wire going to one pin to replace the connector with a Motorcraft one and not a reproduction one. The wires on the Motorcraft replacement connector are larger gauge than the ones on the reproduction connector that I purchased originally. I did not attach an amp clamp to find out how much amperage is going thru the wire so I am not sure if larger wire are needed. The two wire that were spliced together were 12 GA so having the larger 10 GA wire on the replacement connector is nice. Thanks again to everyone for there help and hopefully this information will help someone in the future.
