What are you guys running for manual transmissions on 2wd long wheelbase trucks I have a 66 with a 240 want something easyish to put in I was looking at t 18s and NP435 trans I read as long as it had the divorce transfer case it should work and both these tranny’s should bolt up to a Ford small block Bellhousing which should bolt up to a 240 or 300 6 does this sound correct? Ps I also looked at the t5 option this seems like a lot of work and I am not that experienced what are your thoughts? Right now my truck has a AOD that Somone put in I am not a big fan of this trans originality my truck had a 3 speed on the collum. PLEASE HELP?
Be aware that some of the earlier 4WD NP435s had a longer stick out length on the input shaft and retainer is a different (larger) index diameter.
But, yes, it would be true that if you want to use a 4WD manual transmission in your 2WD you would probably want one of the type that uses a divorced transfer case.Saves the weight of dragging around a transfer case if you don't have to.
The 300 was made up until 1996 so there are a couple of manually shifted overdrive transmissions that could be a nice match, depending on what you are planning. The NP435 is a nice bulletproof trans. No overdrive and a non-synchronized granny low - but it was used in lots of trucks to put it mildly. Parts are easy to get, too.

.
thanks chad very helpful. Do you happen to know the years of the tranny’s that would work I was looking at one for sale out of a 74 f250? Is that a comparable year?
It would take some research to know - at least for me - which years are correct. My gut instinct says that 1974 should be fine. But I believe what you are looking for would have these measurements.
Input shaft: 1-1/16" diameter, 10 spline, stick-out 6-1/2", Pilot tip .668".
Front bearing retainer: flange diameter measures 4.850" and tube is 1.430" in diameter.
Front bolt pattern: symmetrical Ford "butterfly" pattern; roughly 8-1/2" wide by 6-5/16" tall.
