I have a '99 F-250 supercab 2WD 7.3L and was looking to convert to 4WD as I have a friend who has all the 4WD parts I need. However he told me my 2WD ZF6 transmission wouldn't work, that I needed a 4WD ZF6. My question is, can I buy a 4WD tail housing and bolt it up to my 2WD transmission to allow the transfer case to be added or do I have no choice but to get a 4WD transmission? Here's a pic of my transmission:

The tail housing can be changed out but the question is whether or not you can find all the parts you need...might be best to get a 4wd zf6 from a scrap yard...theres one in Baton Rouge on craigslist right now. 2000 7.3L F250
Good luck on your conversion!
Also, you could also look into a divorced transfer case if you don't want to swap out your transmission but it wouldnt be a simple bolt in as compared to swapping trannies
