hey guys..looking for some info...just picked up a 99 f150 5.4 4x4 auto...260k mls...not too keen on the 5.4...trying to find out what else will bolt in its place...its not a daily driver...dump...home depot...run some trails...would love a basic carbed 302... thoughts...ideas...what kind of surgery am i looking at...? thanks for any help
Kelsey, I had a 5.4L Triton in my 2003 f150 ccsb. It was a great engine. I test drove a 2000 f150 sclb with the 4.6L Triton and it was a dog compared to the one I bought.
Be aware that you might have difficulty transplanting a different engine into your truck because of PATS. This is the anti-theft system controlled by the computer which disables the ignition if not funtioning properly. Good luck.
Nothing will just "bolt in" in place of the 5.4 except another modular engine like the 4.6 or maybe even a V10 (if there's space).
If you're looking to put a 302 or 351W in it, engine mounts will need to be fabricated (unless someone out there makes a conversion set which is entirely possible).
Thanks guys...I was just trying to get some options/ opinions...I'm in stickerless Florida so was curious as to the best avenue to go...I would imagine a rebuilt 5.4 and rebuilt tranny is probably the easiest way to go...is there a way to keep the spark plugs from shooting out of the head ?or was it just a bad design...? And coil packs are just going to go...so keep extras...
When you get the rebuild done, you can have inserts put in all the spark plug holes so they'll never eject.
Coil packs (COPs) are actually pretty solid. It became a knee-jerk reaction that whenever a mechanic found a misfire, they'd change the plug and the coil pack at the same time. It was usually a wet boot, rusty spring, or something else unrelated to the COP.
