any problems with 5.4's

I'm looking at '99 and '00 F150's. Right now I have '98 with a 4.6 but am having problems finding a used truck with a 4.6. I am very happy with the 4.6 and not sure if there are any complaints with the 5.4. Has anybody had any problems with the 5.4? I don't know anybody who has had a 5.4 except people who lease and they only keep them for 2 years.

Only problem I've had is that one of the individual coils went out and had to be replaced along with that plug and wire. Nothing major, but since I couldn't figure out which cylinder was missing, I took it to the dealer and paid about $280 for the repair. The truck had about 45,000 miles on it and may have seen a little too much water under the hood during a couple of creek crossing adventures. Water was coming over the hood headed upstream in my 99 4x4 with a 4" suspension lift and 35" tires. Otherwise, it's been an impressive engine.

Let me tell you about MY 1999 F150 4x4 with the 5.4...
I never used the 4x4 as far as off road, the only real task this truck had to do was pull my pop-up. At 44,000 mile with scheduled oil changes, the engine "blew apart".. parts flew off this engine.
After a long battle with Fords... I told them to stick that truck up their butt! The dealership and Fords would not replace my engine (it was out of warrenty)... they first offered 495.00 for ME to pay, and I said at what point was it MY fault that engine blew apart? Then they said my answer was no to the 495.00 and then hit me with a 5,000+ bill to fix it! During my battle with Fords to fix my truck, I found out that in late 1998 they shut down the engine plant that they built the 5.4 because the crank in the engine was breaking! Go figure... Rumor has it.. the 5.4 will be going into recall.
As for me... I was a Ford Enthusiasts... but what after Fords did for me... I will NEVER own another Brand New Ford product again.
I'll be a used car owner for now on...

Sorry to hear that, Ginak. I said the same thing when I owned my 1995 F150 4x4. I spent the better part of 5yrs wondering, what will break next. Then I got a Superduty. Problem solved.
The biggest problem with the 5.4 is......... POWER ADDICTION

I love this engine. It is a great daily driven work and sport engine. Sometimes I yearn for the V10 just because I could've easily had it. But the 5.4 more than earns my respect coing the tasks I need it to.
I am sure that by searching the forums, you've alrady found stuff to be concerned with. I would suggest going with the '00 truck, if you can. But more importantly, give that engine a thorough look over by a 3rd party just to be safe. Buyer beware!
Good luck.

I'm gonna lay low for now on the new trucks for now... I'm still pretty disgusted with Fords. I forgot to mention that I have a 98 E350
cargo van I had since brand new, and I have since had that 5.4 engine rebuilt.
I do/did love that engine... but when it went, I had NO warnings at all... no noise... no rough ride... it just blew!
I dont get it... I'm just waiting to see if the 5.4 gets recalled. And if it does, I'm afraid Fords will have to hear from me again.
