Let me tell you about MY 1999 F150 4x4 with the 5.4...
I never used the 4x4 as far as off road, the only real task this truck had to do was pull my pop-up. At 44,000 mile with scheduled oil changes, the engine "blew apart".. parts flew off this engine.
After a long battle with Fords... I told them to stick that truck up their butt! The dealership and Fords would not replace my engine (it was out of warrenty)... they first offered 495.00 for ME to pay, and I said at what point was it MY fault that engine blew apart? Then they said my answer was no to the 495.00 and then hit me with a 5,000+ bill to fix it! During my battle with Fords to fix my truck, I found out that in late 1998 they shut down the engine plant that they built the 5.4 because the crank in the engine was breaking! Go figure... Rumor has it.. the 5.4 will be going into recall.
As for me... I was a Ford Enthusiasts... but what after Fords did for me... I will NEVER own another Brand New Ford product again.
I'll be a used car owner for now on...
The biggest problem with the 5.4 is......... POWER ADDICTION
I love this engine. It is a great daily driven work and sport engine. Sometimes I yearn for the V10 just because I could've easily had it. But the 5.4 more than earns my respect coing the tasks I need it to.
I am sure that by searching the forums, you've alrady found stuff to be concerned with. I would suggest going with the '00 truck, if you can. But more importantly, give that engine a thorough look over by a 3rd party just to be safe. Buyer beware!
Good luck.
cargo van I had since brand new, and I have since had that 5.4 engine rebuilt.
I do/did love that engine... but when it went, I had NO warnings at all... no noise... no rough ride... it just blew!
I dont get it... I'm just waiting to see if the 5.4 gets recalled. And if it does, I'm afraid Fords will have to hear from me again.
