I have a friend that is working on a 91 E250 camper van. The lift out second row seat (right inside the double doors) is missing. Does anyone know who made these seats or what to ask for if he decides to replace it. He's not worried about color. Were they made for Ford? RV manufacturers? After market? Maybe someone on here even has an extra lying around. At this point he's not sure if he's going to replace or pull the mount plate and re-carpet. He started to run some searches, but doesn't even know how these seats were listed (parts, accessories, etc.). Any help would be appreciated.
The camper van was most certainly an aftermarket conversion, so almost anything might have been in there. I have re-converted old camper vans with different seating--the trick will be to get the seat and seat belt mounting points in reinforced areas.
Is there a converter name on the van? Ford would not have made any camper vans in their own factory. I had a couple Turtle Top camper vans. Other converters like Starcraft, Imperial, and many, many others were in business circa 1991 making conversion vans in a lot of different configurations.
I figured that the seats were prob. third party. I've never seen the single lift outs in anything other than the camper or conversion vans. I didn't know if Ford offered any from the factory or not. If he does replace it would be nice if he could reuse the mounting plate that is already there. I have no idea where he would get one unless he can find a similar van being parted out. I know he's emailed a couple RV salvage yards.
I found a few fold down seats in a pick a part salvage yard.
They were out of conversion vans, and very similar to those in campers/rvs.
I picked one up to modify for our van.
That may be an option?
True....if you do want a bench seat (not sure what the desired format is), looking for one from any brand of conversion van in a junkyard might be worthwhile....most conversion vans were driven as vacation/leisure vehicles with very little use of the back seats (and the 3rd row seats in most passenger conversion vans would fold into a semi-useable bed for a small person). Depends on the current and desired floor layout of the camper van, though.
The standard "luxury conversion" vans had captain's chairs in the front and 2nd row, and a bench/couch in the 3rd row. When I sold our 2002 E150 conversion van last year, the 3rd row had spent most of its life in storage in our garage rafters, with maybe 100 hours of total use carrying passengers.
If you don't need the folding seat, there are probably bench seats out of passenger vans that have been removed by converters on Ebay....you'd be fabricating mounts for most of these, though.
I'm not sure if he is going to continue to look or not. Sounds like the salvage yards he contacted don't understand that it is a single captains style with a lever latch that allows you to lift it off the mount plate. The only replies he got was on bench seats that lift out. My 94 has one similar to his, but the mount plate is different. I already told him I thought he would be better off getting a pedestal modified to fit his mount plate and putting in whatever captains seat he can get at a good price. Thanks for all your replies. I'm going to pass them all on to him.
If he just wants a captain's chair, I'm sure he could find one with a base that would be cheap. Your initial post struck me as his seeking a bench seat--you said "lift out second row seat". If the van floor is reinforced in the mount area, it would not be a big deal to adapt a different base to it. Usually it's just a square hole pattern. The bases in my '02 had a seat belt anchor on them in the center aisle area, but used a harness anchor over the double doors.
Virtually every "luxury" conversion from the 80's to the current date had removable captain's chairs in the middle row so there have to be LOTS out there. Only suggestion is that he should be clear that he is looking for a captain's chair, with base, and suggest that he seek one with dual armrests, which was the common setup for the 2nd row.
