I have recently finished a full front end brake job and finally got it out for the first real drive. This slushbox transmission on this thing feels very, well, slushy. It always feels like it is slipping. I am doing a transmission fluid and filter change and draining the torque converter as much as possible soon. Does anyone have any recommended tips or maybe additives to put in the trans? I know that it could need replacement or rebuild but i don't want to go that route yet. Are there any adjustments or upgrades that can be done without tearing it apart? what solenoids go out the most often? I do have an ABS light on and the speedometer goes on and off and odometer flicker randomly. Could that cause any transmission slippage? Not directly but maybe a sensor problem somewhere.
Are there any pictures of this trans in exploded view or a teardown?
I know a lot of questions. I figure I will measure a whole bunch of times and 'cut' once.
A transmission fluid flush and filter change is always good place to start. However, what is the current condition of your ATF? Is it burnt, does it have clutch material in it? If so, then adding some transmission FIX is probably your best bet if you don't want to do a full rebuild.
Here's the book to get if you want to go through your E4OD:
Know that there are special tools needed to rebuild the E4OD. There are ways around some of these tools, but others are required. Rebuilding and installing an E4OD in my 86 f250 is on my wish list, but it is no small undertaking. It's right up there with installing a turbo.
Thank you! great info and I will be studying that video. I haven't checked the fluid and that obviously means I have no idea of its condition or the amount of crap that might be on the magnet. I just want to be well in the 'know' before starting so i am aware of any possible outcomes. the truck has 151k on the odo but no idea if that is right. The trans does feel like it works once it starts moving but just slips a lot.
I am crossing my fingers this fluid change will help it.
Looking at additives for transmission's and a lot have info about what vehicles use what in different trans. Does anyone have a recommendation or experience with something that works well on the e40d and/or ford transmissions?
Your E4OD is computer controlled and needs accurate sensor data to operate correctly, which is to say yes, your speedometer problem is probably causing problems. All your problems? IDK, But get that sorted out.
Also look into clogs and leaks in the transmission cooling system as another common problem area. The coolers get gummed up over time. Some people try to flush them others just replace them.
I wouldn't use any additives when you change the fluid, just the recommended Ford ATF or equivalent.
Not that I've ever used it in a transmission; however, I do use Lucas fuel treatment in my IDI. I can tell that the engine chatters more without the fuel treatment. Here's their transmission additive, it seems to be well rated:

If your E4OD needs a rebuild is that something that you would consider doing yourself? Or did you just want to look at an exploded diagram for FYI?
I have done a work on a trans before. Possibly I'll be buying the tools and doing it or depending on cost, finding someone.
I like lucas stuff myself. I have used it before in plenty of stuff.
I think my problem with abs is the abs speed sensor on the rear diff. Inexpensive part to change out so I'll start with that.
