Dropping a 460 in.

I got a 54 F500 with a 239 y block that smokes like a locomotive. I got a 76 f250 with a 460 in it with about 50 rounds on it. I'm wondering how well a 460 fits in one of these trucks. Been searching for info and what I found was not too much. I'd be using the c6 behind the 460, and I junked a 78 Winnebago that Im thinkin I could use the axles out of to gain better gears and disk brakes. The rv had about the same gvw. Just pondering the idea, I don't have any of it close by to do any measuring right now

Those trucks do have very large engine bays, but the 460 doesn't fit quite as well as one would think. I have a good friend who has been tinkering with this exact swap off and on for a couple years now. It will certainly go in there, but the sump wants to occupy the same space as the axle, the bellhousing wants to sit in the firewall, and the front pulley wants to be right in the middle of the front crossmember. All at the same time. I think that he found a set of stock manifolds that did get the exhaust to clear the steering gear nicely, so no serious interference there. If your willing to do some cutting or modifying, then things will quickly get easier. If you want to keep the frame and body intact and not have to cut, then expect to have to do a whole lot of juggling and/or compromising.

That's what I was wondering about. I seen a few F100's with the 460 but no details on what it took to get it in there. thank you!!

Hey Curt...

put a 460 in my '53... it fits BUT had some clearance issues with a Volare steering box and headers... You didn't mention your front suspension ??

I did away with the Volare for a Mustang II and that part is cool... I did opt for a rear sump oil pan to get the engine down lower in the frame and avoid the MII crossmember... I'm abut 1-1/2" above the crossmember

also had some issues with radiator clearance (that was basically a measurement blunder I made) and couldn't use stock fan... slim electric puller fan took care of that. Did not use stock radiator mount since I'm running tilt hood and lost the air dam... mine mounts on stubs from a fabricated cross member up front..

I've got no inner fenders... YMMV

the heads are about 3/8" away from the firewall.. it's a good combo with a c-6 and I built a crossmember for the c-6.

it is an engine room full of engine but it will be worth it I think... this isn't latest pic...just one during the build

I was planning on keeping the stock leaf springs and running a front axle from an old rv. Then I'd gain disk brakes and tubeless tires. I want to ditch the 20" rubber and widow maker wheels. As far as a steering box, I want to upgrade to power steering but I'm unsure what I'd use. truck has a 14' flatbed so Id like to haul wheelers on it and pull my travel trailer.

Being a big truck, you'll have acres of room around the oil pan, regardless of the pan you use. It will also clear the front and tranny cross member, as well as the firewall. The only tight spot will be the drivers exhaust if using stock manifolds. Mine were from a car, so maybe truck one's would be more swap friendly.

I'm not sure what room differences you'll have with an F500 vs an F600, but I posted a few new photos today that show exactly how tight of a fit it is.

Oil pan isn't an issue on the larger trucks unless you use an engine mount that's also a cross member. I opted to side mount things, and now I'm having to figure out the cross member under the cab due to where my headers end up. My engine is far from stock so I'm not sure how much things will differ clearance wise. I have 4 points that are within 1/4" of touching. But it fits, and haven driven the truck this engine came from, it will so very well be worth it.
