P0708 error

How critical is this error? As this is a farm truck that only see the hwy about 1 or twice a month. As ideas on where to start? My not that mechanically incline but I can get the job done, if pointed in the right direction. Is it still safe to drive, or should I stop driving it and get it fixed asap. I'll take any help I can get.

You have to first find out what the code is indicating in order to effect a repair.
708 is the transmission selector switch circuit is open. The readout photo tells you this.
Get under the truck and inspect the harness and plugup on the transmission would be prudent.
Good luck.

Can you be a little more specific on where under the truck I looking at. I’ve looked under and don’t see anything that is not plugged in near the transmission.

That harness plugs into the Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) in the driver's side of the transmission. The shift cable also attaches there. Pull the connector off of the sensor and see if there is corrosion in the connector. If that is fine, it is either a bad sensor or a damaged wire between there and the PCM.

You have to get under the truck on the driver side of the trans and look at the range selector plugup.
It may be loose, it may be corroded, leads may be ripped off etc.
Looking from a distance won't do.
There are a large number of leads from start, to gear selection.
Its an elecrtic operated transmission that is controlled by the computer.
The computer sees an open A solenoid lead hence the code you see.
The code is very specific.
Good luck.

Is this the part I need? Any special tools or tips on replacing it? I removed the connected and didn’t see any corrosion.

That is the right part. A new one may or may not fix it. The problem is either a bad part or a problem in the wiring harness.
